Greetings and salutations loyal blog readers! Thanks for coming back!

I was reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally lazy this weekend. By Sunday at 5pm, I had completed: 1 mash-up. I also had started work on: 1 flashback. So not even 50% of my workload was done. I was able to draw one strip and I only have the colouring to do on the flashback, so now I’m at 66% done. I should be able to either finish the flashback or draw the second strip tonight leaving the other for tomorrow. I can live with that.

What did I do all weekend? Well, there was a dinner party at Fab’s on Saturday. I started getting ready for that at around 2pm and I got home around 2am (we had a great time). Sunday I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy for the third time (did I mention that movie is awesome?) I was going to watch Summerslam on Sunday night, but I got so frustrated trying just to place the order for the pay-per-view, that I decided to forget it. At least I got some of that late work done.

I have 8 strips left to write in Year 3 of the Funnies. Mouser had Red Rich, Tomaw and Skitter in his sights in Thursday’s strip. This begins the biggest hurdle I had left to jump to be able to start the end game of the current storyline. I can say with some assurance that it will end sometime during Year 4. I’d say I was aiming for before Christmas, but we all know how well that went LAST year. It’ll end when it ends.

I thought I had more to write, but my mind’s gone blank. I guess that concludes this week’s blog. Have a good week folks!

Hey folks. I was feeling a little under the weather yesterday so no blog. Today’s blog is  gonna be short as it’s Tuesday morning and I have to go to work shortly.

We had game night on Saturday. It was exactly the kind of fun I needed after a week of feeling sorta down. We’re rotating who gets to pick the game(s) we play (mostly from my collection admittedly) and Daniel picked one from my unplayed pile, Beowulf: The Legend for the first and DC Comics Deck-Building Game for the second. Beowulf is a game that I got during Fantasy Flight Games’ yearly Holiday a couple of years back sale for $5. After playing the game I can’t say that I would have bought it at a much higher price. It’s not a BAD game. It’s a well-designed game with a solid bidding mechanic. It just didn’t have that high fun factor that I’m after. The two games of DC that we played were much more fun in my opinion.

Went to see Guardians of the Galaxy again on Sunday and I can pretty safely say now that it’s my favorite Marvel movie to date. So much fun!

Spent the rest of Sunday feeling a little wonky to the stomach which lasted into the night (didn’t get my second comic drawn) and into Monday which leads me to today. I’m feeling better now though! So that’s the weekend! Have a good week folks!

Sorry folks, I’m super tired today. A weekend of self-loathing and doubt (more so than usual) culminated in a sleepless night last night. I’m going to keep this post brief as a result.

The one high point of my weekend was seeing Guardians of the Galaxy on Friday. The movie was excellent and I daresay it’s my favorite Marvel movie yet. It was a wonderful blend of action, humor and sympathetic characters. I can’t wait to see it again…and again.

I don’t think it’ll be a surprise when I tell you that Rocket Raccoon was my favorite character. The little guy is just full of win. I’m looking forward to hearing Bradley Cooper’s take on the character (I saw the movie in French). There was one elderly woman in the theatre who laughed with delight every time he was on-screen, so I know I’m not the only Rocket fan in the room. By all reports, he’s going to be a big moneymaker for Marvel this year.

The plot is nothing groundbreaking. It’s really all about the characters here.Still, there’s some development in this movie that puts a lot of what’s been seen in prior Marvel movies into context. There are scenes here that are almost essential for the non-comics fan to follow what’s been going on and what’s coming up.

Marvel has proven that they know what they’re doing on the big screen. Guardians was probably their riskiest move yet and they pulled it off really well. With Ant-Man and Dr. Strange on the horizon (and rumors of Black Panther and the Inhumans a little further out), it was important for Marvel to prove that people could be receptive to a movie that doesn’t feature Captain America, Thor or Iron Man. Given how much I enjoyed Guardians, I’m a lot more optimistic about their future non-Avengers endeavors.

In other news, I’m down to three-day weekends for the month of August. The funny thing is I did more drawing in my three-day weekend than I did in either of my four-day weekends. The last few weekends I would draw a new mash-up, a flashback and one strip and then have to draw my second strip during the week. This past weekend, I got all my required work done so my weeknights will be free to work on other projects.

Anyhoo, that’s all for now. Have a good week folks!

Hey there sports fans! It’s okay if I call you sports fans right? I’m aware that not all of you are into sports. It’s an expression. Like, “See ya later, alligator!” I don’t really think you’re an alligator, do I? Well, maybe you’re a ‘gator in Animus fan’s clothing. How do I know? I feel I may be getting a little sidetracked. That happens when I’m hungry. As I am now. I’m going to try to keep this brief so I can eat foodstuffs sooner rather than later.

We played another new game this weekend: The revised edition of Arcana from Fantasy Flight Games (actually, originally from Dust Games but distributed in my neck of the woods by FFG). It’s a deck-building game set in the Cadwallon universe where each player controls a guild trying to amass the most influence in the city of Cadwallon. The twist on the deck building mechanic is that rather than buy cards outright, everybody is assigning their cards to one of the city’s districts and hopefully secure the card in that district before anyone else. If it’s a friendly district, they can keep the card face down so people won’t know what they bid. If it’s an enemy or neutral district, they have to play the card face up so everyone else will know if it’s worth committing to that resource. There are three types of cards: Agents/Personalities, which you use send to the district to secure the resource, Locations, which allow you to perform an action such as relocating a friendly or enemy agent, and Relics, which can be used to bribe Personalities to join your guild. There’s more to it than that of course, but it’s just a short summary for the purposes of this blog.

Now normally when I bring out a new game, I forgo the ‘first game’ recommendations given in the rulebook and just incorporate everything in at once. In Arcana’s case, one of those added options was building your own starting deck. Because none of us had played we wouldn’t really have been able to decide what cards were worth adding to a deck and which ones were okay to leave out. So we played our first game with just the basics and then added everything else in for the second game. I’d say it worked out well. We were able to appreciate the other options better thanks to our first experience without them. I will say that I was and wasn’t a fan of the event deck. It did put the game on a definite timer (there could be no more than 12 rounds) and the events did add some major twists that made the game more unpredictable, but it made going for objectives (another option added in the second game) much more difficult to achieve since if cards from the districts you needed to possess for your objective didn’t show up quickly, you really had to hope you were lucky and they showed up in time. Also, some of the twists were maybe a bit too wacky for my tastes. Everybody having to play cards at random from their hand for instance. Do we get to look at the card we picked before we assign it? Well, if not how will I know if it’s a personality or not? If so, what’s the big deal? I guess it means you might not get to play your cards in the optimal order, but still. I wasn’t as big of a fan.

To keep things fairly balanced, the starting decks for each guild are pretty similar to one another. I would have liked to see a little more variety. In the second game, I had a deck that was geared towards diplomacy (staffs) but almost every card in the districts needed religion (cups). It was a little frustrating to have my options so severely limited because there were four out of five cards I couldn’t even think of going for.

These quibbles aside, Arcana was a fun game and I’d play it again, though I’d probably leave the Event cards out. I’d also recommend it for anybody who enjoys deck-building games.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. My stomach is taking over now. Have a good week folks!

Happy Monday! He said, when Monday was closer to being over than it was to beginning. I trust everyone is well and enjoyed their weekend.

I had a pretty good weekend myself. I was invited to a little gathering of friends at Zone 51 to celebrate a friend’s birthday. It had been over a month and a half if not two months since I’d been able to go to the Zone so I had a LOT of comics waiting for me. I really need to go more regularly so as to avoid having to plunk down huge chunks of change at one time. I also thought it would be an opportune time to pick up some more long boxes to store my comics in. This was the third time I’d told myself I needed to pick some up and it was the third time that I completely spaced and forgot to do so. Well, here’s to hoping I remember when I go back on Thursday!

It was a nice get-together with friends, Rock Band and cake! It’s always a treat to spend some time with my friends. The cake was also a treat that was coffee and chocolate flavoured and really good but also REALLY rich! I had one slice and would have been hard-pressed to eat another. As for Rock Band, my experience is very limited. The majority of the song library were out of my wheelhouse, but I did find a couple of songs to sing since I’m just a karaoking fool.

On Sunday, it was out to the lake to my mother’s cabin for a barbecue. My aunt Liz is in town from Nova Scotia and it’s been a few years since I’ve had a chance to see her so it was nice to be able to do so. My mother had already introduced her to my site, but I was able to talk a little bit more about what it is I’m doing. I gave her a set of the postcards I made for Free Comic Book Day to take back to Nova Scotia with her. We’ll all be getting back together this week for supper at my sister’s.

Add a little drawing to all that and that was my weekend. With that, this week’s blog is concluded! Have a good week folks!
