Sorry folks, I’m super tired today. A weekend of self-loathing and doubt (more so than usual) culminated in a sleepless night last night. I’m going to keep this post brief as a result.
The one high point of my weekend was seeing Guardians of the Galaxy on Friday. The movie was excellent and I daresay it’s my favorite Marvel movie yet. It was a wonderful blend of action, humor and sympathetic characters. I can’t wait to see it again…and again.
I don’t think it’ll be a surprise when I tell you that Rocket Raccoon was my favorite character. The little guy is just full of win. I’m looking forward to hearing Bradley Cooper’s take on the character (I saw the movie in French). There was one elderly woman in the theatre who laughed with delight every time he was on-screen, so I know I’m not the only Rocket fan in the room. By all reports, he’s going to be a big moneymaker for Marvel this year.
The plot is nothing groundbreaking. It’s really all about the characters here.Still, there’s some development in this movie that puts a lot of what’s been seen in prior Marvel movies into context. There are scenes here that are almost essential for the non-comics fan to follow what’s been going on and what’s coming up.
Marvel has proven that they know what they’re doing on the big screen. Guardians was probably their riskiest move yet and they pulled it off really well. With Ant-Man and Dr. Strange on the horizon (and rumors of Black Panther and the Inhumans a little further out), it was important for Marvel to prove that people could be receptive to a movie that doesn’t feature Captain America, Thor or Iron Man. Given how much I enjoyed Guardians, I’m a lot more optimistic about their future non-Avengers endeavors.
In other news, I’m down to three-day weekends for the month of August. The funny thing is I did more drawing in my three-day weekend than I did in either of my four-day weekends. The last few weekends I would draw a new mash-up, a flashback and one strip and then have to draw my second strip during the week. This past weekend, I got all my required work done so my weeknights will be free to work on other projects.
Anyhoo, that’s all for now. Have a good week folks!
