So this year I decided to do as I’d done for the past few years and schedule my vacation days on Mondays and Fridays in July. Tomorrow is the last of my Mondays off. Don’t worry though, I still have all of my Fridays in August off.  Woo!

Just for funsies, I checked the Monday Blog tag and it said that I had 41 topics with that tag. Now, considering that I write one blog a week, this would in theory be my 42nd week writing blogs. 10 weeks to go before I hit the one year mark. I’m happy about that.

I have three weeks worth of my next project for the site done. It’s going a little slower than I had hoped. I need to kick it in gear. I want to get even further ahead before I go live with the first instalment. For those out there looking for a hint, all I will say is that the answer is in the mash-ups. I promise to thoroughly disappoint you all! 😉

Speaking of mash-ups, I printed out all the mash-ups I’ve done so far and the printed versions came out rather nice. Pretty sharp in some instances. I won’t say that they’re great, because I think there’s always room for improvement, but I don’t hate them. How’s that for a ringing endorsement? “Carja for ageofanimus.com had this to say about his site, “I don’t hate it!”” Yup! High praise indeed.

Sorry for the abridged blog this week. After two weeks of longer installments, you might have thought I had turned over a new leaf. No such luck. It just goes with the subject and this week I have no fancy subject to wax eloquent on. As always, I’m open to discuss any subjects related to the site in a future blog. Send those emails in!

Seeya next week!

Hey there blog fans!

So last week I started talking about making mash-ups. After writing it I was left with the task of deciding what would be last week’s mash-ups. As you saw I picked the Ronin Warriors. In the mash-up post I said that I was a little disappointed with how they turned out. That was because in becoming overly concerned with the detail of the armors the characters were wearing, I forgot to make the designs mine so to speak. They really just looked like Ronin Warriors armors with Animus faces. This is an important point in making mash-ups. You have to achieve a balance between the two sources you’re combining.

Getting back to where I left off last week, after casting a character, I’m ready to draw. I like to find a good reference picture of the the original character I’m combining. Yahoo Images is my Go-to source. I can usually find several good pictures to use there. Below is a new mash-up I drew specially for this blog entry to show the steps.

I use MyPaint in LiberKey to do my mash-ups. There are no doubt much better drawing software packages around, but this one was free and I’ve gotten used to it (though I just downloaded an update recently and now I’m finding myself having to relearn how to do certain things that were more intuitive in the old version). In this case, I decided to do a mash-up of Todrick and Booster Gold. The source picture of Booster Gold I found on Yahoo! Images was drawn by Todd Nauck. You can find more of Todd’s work here.

I’ll leave the Yahoo window with my reference picture open next to my MyPaint window so I can look at it while I’m drawing. I have a Bamboo tablet which I use to draw everything for Age of Animus. I hold it on my lap to draw since my desktop is a little too high and I need access to my keyboard to use quick commands. That means that I have to look up at the screen to see what I’m drawing. That’s a big adjustment compared to drawing on paper on a desktop.

First I draw a “quick” sketch using the pencil brush in MyPaint, usually in red, though I have started using different colours to distinguish more easily between layers in the picture.

Once I have my sketch, I can use a marker brush to “ink” the drawing. The inking won’t always follow the pencilling as I often make slight changes. When I need to draw something that intersects with something else in the picture, often I’ll add a layer so that I can erase what’s underneath without affecting the new elements that will be covering them. That’s one of the great advantages to drawing digitally I find. When the inking is done, I make the pencil layer invisible.

When I colour a Funnies strip, I use the Fill-in tool that’s available in Manga Studio Debut (and most picture editing software). MyPaint doesn’t have a Fill-In tool (or I just haven’t found it) so I colour the pictures manually, like I would colour a picture in a colouring book. I’ll add a layer and move it under the ink layer so that I can’t colour over the lines. It also allows me to easily resave a black and white version of the picture if I make any changes while I’m colouring.

For certain pictures I’ll use different brushes to add light and shade. The Wonderland mash-ups are the best examples of that. Again, I’ll use a different layer so I can erase without affecting any of the other elements.

As I said earlier, drawing digitally means that it’s never too late to go back to fix something. I can just switch to the appropriate layer and add a brush stroke wherever needed. When I’m satisfied that everything is as good enough, I’ll save a colour and black and white version of the drawing.

I repeat the process for each character I’ve planned for that particular mash-up. As mentionned in last week’s blog, I like to pick themes that have roles for all nine Animus cast members, but it’s not a hard rule. The Ronin Warriors theme had twelve different drawings while this week’s theme only has five (you’ll have to check in on Wednesday to see what this week’s theme is).

Anyhoo, that’s how the mash-ups are made. Most of it is really just common-sense based on the tools available. If I get on a roll and the designs of the theme I’ve chosen aren’t super detailed, I can produce one character mash-up in an hour give or take. The more detailed mash-ups take longer. I think some of the Ronin pictures took two or more hours to draw.

See y’all next week for the blog!

The blog is up early? And there’s an actual subject to discuss? Will wonders ever cease?

Some of you may be curious what goes into making a series of mash-ups. Those of you who aren’t interested will find this blog entry pretty dull. You have been warned!

I’ll use last Wednesday’s Alice mash-ups as an example of what the process is like. Incidentally, I learned a few things about the book (like it’s official title is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) and its author while doing research for the Alice mash-up post, and because I believe in being educational as well as entertaining, I’ll share some of these little nuggets of information with you. For example, did you know that Lewis Carroll was a pseudonym? Carroll’s real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. For clarity, throughout the rest of the post I will refer to the author by the more commonly-known name of Carroll.

PICKING A THEME

Okay, so it’s time to make the mash-ups. The first thing I have to do, of course, is decide upon a theme. This isn’t always as easy as it seems. Every week, I want to pick a subject matter that’s well-known enough that my audience will recognize what it is even without reading the blurbs that accompany the pictures. You may not get EVERY character, but hopefully you’ll recognize where they’re all from. This will be hit and miss. Obviously, the choices are going to be influenced by my interests, which means you’re more likely to recognize the source material if you share some of my interests (like the Bill and Ted mash-ups).

Also, the source material has to have characters whose costumes are easily recognizable so when I draw the Animus characters wearing them, you can tell who they’re supposed to be. Everybody’s heard of James Bond, but if you saw Todrick dressed up like James Bond, that is to say, in a tux, would you immediately know who he’s supposed to be? I’d have to draw him in an iconic Bond pose to really sell it. That’s not to say I couldn’t do a James Bond theme, just that it isn’t an easy fit.

But iconic characters aren’t enough. It has to be appropriate for the audience I’m aiming at. For instance, I’d never do a Friday the 13th mash-up, because I find that it would be completely inappropriate for a site aimed mostly at kids. Not that I like Friday the 13th…slasher movies freak me out.

Ideally, the subject matter I choose will have enough characters for me to do mash-ups of the entire main Animus Funnies cast, but it isn’t required. For example, I really wanted to do Tron, but after doing Tron, Flynn, Lori and Sark I felt I’d done enough to represent the franchise. No other characters from the movie would bring anything different to the table. I didn’t feel like doing the Tron: Legacy stuff at the time.

So how did I come to pick Alice? Well, I felt like doing something other than a movie or from the comics. I thought maybe a book. But which one? Alice in Wonderland was the first idea to come to mind. It met all the criteria I look for in a potential mash-up subject. It’s well-known, the characters are recognizable and plentiful and the material is (mostly) appropriate.

DISTRIBUTING THE ROLES

Once I’ve settled on the theme, I have to decide who will play who? Usually, there are a couple of obvious picks and I’ll start with those. As I’m drawing those, I’m thinking about connections between the characters and who’d fit well with who. Atfer I’ve made up my mind about the principle chracters from the theme material, it’s often a question of who’s left and filling in the holes in the cast as best I can.

In Alice, there’s the White Rabbit. Obviously, that was going to be Cyran. The Cheshire Cat had to be Sass and Zoë had to be the Dormouse. Barnaby seemed a natural fit for a character with “dum” in the name.

Speaking of Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum, seeing as I’m mostly familiar with the Disney cartoon of Alice, I didn’t know that Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum were from Through the Looking Glass, And What Alice Found There. I discovered that when I was doing a little research to write the blurbs for the post. It’s still Alice though, thank goodness!

I like to keep to the original character’s gender but that isn’t a hard rule. When I was doing Star Wars, I felt that Zoë made the most sense to play Han since she’s a pilot. In Avengers, there simply weren’t enough female roles to go around which is one of the reasons I picked Sass to play Iron Man.

So I’m doing Alice and I’ve already cast two of my female characters. That left Nektara or Deema to play Alice. Nektara was the most natural fit.

Until I actually draw a specific character though, I might change my mind a couple of times. This was the case with Deema. Originally, I thought I’d cast her as the Caterpillar (since the Caterpillar is green), but then I thought she’d be a better fit for the tea party and was going to make her into the March Hare with Todrick as the Mad Hatter. That left me thinking about Big Oonch and Red Rich.

Ah Big Oonch! He’s always interesting to cast. One of the rules I’ve made for myself is that you’re never supposed to see Big Oonch’s eyes and that rule holds true for the mash-ups as well. (Astute Age of Animus followers will know that I’ve broken this rule once. Can you find where?) This rule sometimes makes my choice for me. Rufus wears sunglasses. Scrap-Iron and Sci-Fi wear visors. If not, I try to pick a character whose eyes can be easily obscured. The trouble was I couldn’t think of anybody in Alice.

This is where my lack of intimate knowledge of Alice in Wonderland worked against me. The only roles I felt I had left to fill were the Queen which I decided would go to Red Rich (more on that later) and the Caterpillar, which would obviously have to go to Big Oonch. But that didn’t feel right. So I decided to go back to Deema being the Caterpillar and decided that Oonch would be the March Hare.

This post is turning out to be longer than I thought it’d be. This seems like as good a point as any to stop for this week. I’ll continue with the rest of the story behind the mash-ups next week.

Here we are again, late on Monday with me not having written my blog yet. The truth is, I don’t know what to write about. When I talk about what I’m doing on the site, I worry that it sounds like I’m tooting my own horn, not to mention I feel that it all starts sounding pretty repetitive after a while. Of course, I suppose a certain amount of horn-tooting is expected if I want to get my site out there. It just feels awkward ya know?

Okay, let’s toot a little. Friday I worked on next week’s mash-ups. I put up a little preview on Facebook. I decided to move away from movies and comics this time out. I am really pleased how they turned out. Feel free to guess what’s coming up! Only, you don’t have that much time to guess before Wednesday. It sure would be swell if ya did though! I’d know you all were keeping up with the site!

Saturday and Sunday I drew my two strips and I’m getting closer to the end of the Crimson Coast storyline…even if the last strip from it won’t appear before September. I’ve gotta start thinking of the next arc. I have ideas for stuff to come later down the line, but it’s not time for those yet. So c’mon brain! Do your thing!

On Sunday, I worked on Kerfuffle Shuffle again. It’d been a LONG time since I did that. As I was working on card layouts, I changed some ideas, refined others. I still have no idea if what I have will work as a game. Boy I hope so!

Late last night I also resumed reading A Dance with Dragons. I’ve had the book for a year now and I still haven’t finished. Makes me wonder why I was in a rush to get the hardcover. If I’d known it’d take me this long to read it, I’d have waited for the paperback. Don’t get me wrong though! I’m enjoying the book. I just haven’t been in an intense reading mood. I’m getting there though if Sunday night is any indication. I only stopped because I couldn’t keep my eyes open a second longer. I thought I’d read more today, but I got distracted with laundry and other mundane things.

Okay, I think that’s all I have to say this week. I’ll try to think up of some new subject for next week’s blog, but I ain’t makin’ no promises! Until then, have a good week y’all! Enjoy this week’s strips and mashups!

Hey all,

I’m late with the blog again this week. That’s what happens when I don’t work on Mondays…I forget that it’s blog day. Oh well, better late than never, right?

First off, let me give a shout out to little Adrien Marc Noel whose baptism I attended yesterday. He’s two months old and I just now got around to seeing him. Pure laziness on my part. I will say, he is a handsome little devil. His momma has a right to be proud.

It had been some time since I’d last set foot in a church. If I’m not mistaken, the last time was for my grandmother’s funeral. A funeral followed by a baptism pretty much covers the circle of life doesn’t it? St. James’ is a nice Anglican church in Trois-Rivieres. They have bilingual services which is really nice. The parishioners were very friendly, though not numerous at all. I think we tripled the regular attendance with the folks there for the baptism.

You’d think that with the baptism on Sunday and me writing the blog so late that I mustn’t have much else left to do this weekend. Well, actually, just as soon as I finish this I’ll be getting ready to see my friend Frank perform in Amos Daragon at Cité de l’Energie. He doesn’t have a speaking role, but he gets a dance number. Should be fun, but it’ll be way late before the play ends. There are fireworks involved which is why it starts so late.

Not as productive a weekend this weekend, though I did get eight of my nine mashups for this weekend done, as well as two pages for the September project (I’ll have to think up some kind of code name for it) as well as my regular two Funnies.

Okay, I really need to get ready now, so I’m gonna cut this short. Talk to you all again next Monday (assuming I remember it’s blog day!)
