First off, let me wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadians out there. Hope you’re all enjoying your Monday off.

Last week, I said I’d have more to talk about in this week’s blog and I do. This is a big week for me and for the site.

Yesterday was Age of Animus’ first birthday. I don’t like sharing my own birthday with folks, but this is a day I’m actually proud of. Something I created is now out there for all the world to see. Over a hundred strips, even more individual drawings, a dozen stories, not to mention 52 Monday Blogs. Things haven’t gone exactly how I planned.  Originally, this site was supposed to be all about the stories I was writing. The Funnies were supposed to be little gag strips to fill in the gaps. Now I’m spending most of my time on the Funnies and I haven’t written any new stories in months. At some point, I’d like to go back and write some more, as I have some ideas I’d like to get to that further shape the world of Pelaria, but for now I’m happy with the way things are going. A year ago, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to create enough content to keep the site running but thanks to the shift in focus, I’m still going strong.

The Funnies cast is developing nicely. I have more of an idea of who each character is, what they would or wouldn’t say or do, who I’m comfortable being the victims of physical comedy and what not (poor Todrick and Red Rich). Starting next week, there’s a new storyline that further develops the relationship between certain characters that I hope you’ll enjoy and in the upcoming year, Zoë will finally have a chance to shine.

I’m spending this week looking at some “rejected” ideas for Age of Animus. Be sure to check back every weekday to see where Age of Animus COULD have gone.

In addition, there will still be new mash-ups on Wednesday as I conclude my visit with the X-Men. The mash-ups have been great as I’ve been trying new things and growing as an artist. I use the word loosely only because I don’t think drawer sounds right. I suppose I could refer to myself simply as “one who draws”. I think my drawing pad has been one of my best purchases ever, because it’s allowed me to try things that I don’t think I could have achieved using pencil and paper. After getting used to drawing in this new way, it’s been so much more fun being able to just draw. If I don’t like a line, I can erase it without leaving a trace and continue.

On Friday, Project AW continues. After months of waiting, the first page finally went up and…it was just one panel  with the Funnies cast. Well, yeah. It’s going to be a while before we get to the reveal. Any guesses as to what AW stands for?

I haven’t delivered on some of the announcements I made in the past twelve months. Kerfuffle Shuffle isn’t ready yet and the Age of Animus – Fun ‘n’ Fantasy crossover plans haven’t progressed since I announced the idea (sad to say that Project AW is NOT that crossover). I haven’t given up on the ideas though. Creating a board game is still something I very much want to do and I do think it’d be fun to revisit the FnF crew. I’m just into other things right now. Part of why I’ve been able to keep up with Age of Animus when so many other projects I started quickly fizzled out is because I’m having fun with it. If I put too much pressure on myself to deliver things I’m not ready to work on, it’ll stop being fun. I’m not doing this for money (although if money fell in my lap I wouldn’t say no), so it’s important that I keep things light. I’m sure you all understand.

As I wrap things up for this week, I’d like to thank all the family and friends who’ve shown support of what I’m doing here on Age of Animus, and to all those people I haven’t met who’ve dropped in to check the site out in its first twelve months. Hopefully, you’ve liked what you’ve seen. There’s more to come and I can’t wait to share it with you all.

Much love,

James (Carja)

A new work week has started and I’ve changed departments so that means new responsibilities and the like. Always nice to keep things fresh.

Friday is day one of the super secret project I’ve been talking about all summer. Be sure to check in to see what it is, even if you won’t be able to really get a feel for it until a few weeks in. Just come and see okay?

I’d also recommend checking in on Sunday, just because that’s a special day for Age of Animus.

I really don’t have anything else to report. Sorry, no big blog this week. I’ll have more to say next Monday for sure. Until then, take it easy folks.

Being sick is no fun. On Wednesday I had a scratchy throat. On Thursday I started getting a running nose. On Friday I was feeling really stuffed up and kinda slow. As I finished giving the training I was scheduled to give, I decided to use some of my accumulated time to finish early. On Saturday, I ventured out of the house for a few hours and came home feeling exhausted. I spent most of the rest of the weekend sleeping and today I’m home as I finish getting over my cold. There are fluid build ups I could do without, but tomorrow I should be fine.

I found Intellivision cartridges at Comic-Con so for the first time in years I hooked up my Intellivision to my television to play. My HD TV did not seem to enjoy the experience so much. It’s sad that I might have to get an old TV just to play old school games on. I have fond memories playing with that machine. I was late in getting a Nintendo and I played Intellivision (actually it was a Tandyvision clone) way into the late eighties. I once found the Intellivoice module for $20 at Canadian Tire. We lent the machine to a person who shall remain nameless who never returned it. I found an actual Intellivision along with a bunch of cartridges at a neighbour’s garage sale. I don’t have an Intellivoice module for it though. Maybe someday I’ll buy one on eBay.

September is almost over and some of you blog readers may be wondering “Hey! I thought you said you had something new for Fridays in September!” And I did. However, I wanted to finish the coming home from the Crimson Coast storyline before I started it. The last strip of that arc goes up on October 4th, so you’ll have to wait until October 5th for that. I wish I could say that I was able to advance in that project with all that added time, but the sad truth is that combined with Comic-Con and trying to maintain my lead on Funnies and mash-ups, I haven’t worked on it in a long time. I’ll have to set aside one day per week to work on it.

Before I close, I have a question to ask you blog readers: What is your favorite old-school video game (Atari/Colecovision/Intellivision)?

Whew! What a weekend! Comic-Con has come and gone and a good time was had by me and my pals.

Where to begin? Well, why not begin with my personal high note, meeting Adam Baldwin. Why was meeting Adam Baldwin a high point for me? Because it was the first time I personally shared Age of Animus with someone I didn’t know, and not just anyone, a movie and television star! And he liked it (or did a convincing job of pretending he did)! For those of you who may not know, Adam, played the role of Jayne Cobb on Firefly, which only happens to be one of my very favorite shows, and also the subject of much mash-upping here on Age of Animus in the last two weeks.

Sometime this summer, after finding out that Adam Baldwin would be coming to Montreal and Jewel Staite would be coming to Trois-Rivieres, I got the idea of drawing a poster of the cast of Animus Funnies dressed up as Firefly characters and how cool it would be to get that poster signed by the cast of Firefly. This is typically the kind of great idea I get and put off working on until it’s too late and then give up on. This time, although I did wait until it was almost too late, I got the poster finished and printed in time for Comic-Con. I figured I’d pay for an autograph from Adam Baldwin, but there was no guarantee he’d sign my poster (some folk are reluctant to sign third party stuff). But Adam was very nice, and he even gave me positive comments on the piece. I gave him the Jayne-Barnaby mash-up I drew and he took my site name down. All very thrilling for me.

Of course, Mr. Baldwin is an actor who must get this kind of thing all the time, and not being privy to his inner thoughts, I can’t 100% be certain that he wasn’t just being polite  However! I prefer to believe that he was being genuine and that just made my day.

That was on Saturday morning. On Friday night, I had my picture taken with Mr. Baldwin (he’s a big dude) and attended his panel. Incidentally, the first day of an event that celebrates nerdy interests of all kinds? THAT’s the day I chose to wear non-nerdy clothes (I almost always wear comic/sci-fi t-shirts). Later, we saw James Marsters in concert. Very enjoyable and to be honest, much better than I expected. He sounds better live than he did in the Buffy musical.

On Saturday I was in costume as Flint from GIJoe. I have to admit, this was my biggest disappointment of the con. Wearing a costume at a con really puts you out there and people either respond positively or they don’t. In my case, they didn’t react at all. In fact, I got as many pictures taken of me this year wearing a full costume as I did last year when I was simply wearing black shorts and a Charlie Brown shirt. I firmly believe that I put together a swell costume, which only leads me to believe that if the costume was good, it’s the guy in the costume that was the problem. It certainly doesn’t make me feel very excited about wearing a costume at next year’s con.

But enough about the disappointment! I had a great time at the con. I witnessed Patrick Stewart (who I spoke with ever so briefly after standing in line for a (very) expensive autograph) and William Shatner share the same stage for a jam-packed room, I saw Wil Wheaton speak in person and spoke with him the next day. Adam Baldwin walked within spitting distance of me twice (once at our hotel and again at the con), I joined in in singing Happy Birthday in French for Mike Mignola, and saw a lot of neat people in costume and even more neat stuff, only an infinitely small part of which came home with me.

Also, the cast of Animus Funnies made another appearance at the con when I wore my cast t-shirt on Sunday. I think I caught one girl reading the names while we were all waiting in line (neat!). It reoccurred to me then that the one thing that’s missing from that shirt design is an Age of Animus logo…DOH!

On our way home, Lyne said that the worst thing about leaving was that we were the longest time possible away from attending Comic-Con again. It’s so true, but my wallet for one is thankful!

I’m feeling a little drained tonight and it’s getting late so tonight’s blog will be short.

I had an excellent time in Montreal on Saturday. Fab and I went to see the Star Wars Identities Exhibit at the Montreal Science Centre. It was fun and educational. A lot was stuff I already knew, but there was some psychological and sociological stuff I hadn’t heard before. Lots of pictures up on my personal Facebook page (not on the Age of Animus Facebook page). We did a little shopping on our way to the Science Centre and for once, Fab spent more than me! I spent more than him on souvenirs at the exhibit though so it’s a wash.

On Sunday, I was invited for lunch at my grandfather’s. Other than my sister, I hadn’t seen any of the family members who were there in over a year. They love me and all, but it’s not a setting I feel especially comfortable in. My aunt prepared games for us to play in the style of Minute to Win It. I was teamed up with my grandfather and we finished dead last. Oh I sucked bad!

This will be a short work week since I asked for Friday off because we’re going to Comic-Con. Comic-Con! If you’re there on Saturday, look for Flint. That should be me. Unless someone else dresses up as Flint. Then it COULD be me. Ask!

I need to draw two strips between now and the 21st to maintain my three week lead going into the weekend after Comic-Con. I’m ahead on mash-ups. Woo!

Anyhoo! That’s all for now. I need food and then I’m gonna watch a little wrestling on TV before bed. Have a good week everybody!
