It’s Monday and I didn’t have to go in to work! Seeing as how Remembrance Day fell on a weekend this year, we got Monday off instead. I’d been feeling pretty drained lately, so it was nice to have a three day weekend. Alas, all good things must come to an end. Tomorrow it’s back to the grind and there are no planned days off until Christmas.

I’d been planning to play a lot of Skylanders this weekend, but didn’t do so until today. I got a couple of hours in this afternoon. Why didn’t I play more? Well, I’d been working on the site of course.

First, I got ahead on the mash-ups. I’ve got three instalments’ worth of mash-ups done in the past week. Pretty happy about that. We’re in for four weeks of wrestling mash-ups. First two weeks of good guys, then two weeks of bad guys. I’m pleased with the way most of them turned out, but there are a couple that didn’t work as well as I’d have liked.

Of course, I got my weekend strip drawing done as well. I’m into the next little arc which highlights Deema and Red Rich.

Finally, I made 50 new magnet designs for the Cafepress store featuring my favorite mash-ups. It was pretty tedious work uploading the artwork to their server and then making 50 magnets. You know what else is pretty tedious (not to mention expensive)? Ordering 50 different magnets! I’m anxious to see how they turned out though.

So that’s it for this week. I’ll blog it up again next Monday.

My head would be a lot nicer place if I just stayed out of it.

That’s me trying to be clever in describing my mental state this past week. I spend a lot of time in my head (don’t we all) and it sometimes keeps me from enjoying myself. This was definitely the case at Reunion Stellaire. One week later and I still hadn’t quite moved on. My disappointment was still bothering me. That weekend, I couldn’t get out of my own head which is something that occurs all too often I’m afraid. So instead of having an awesome time like my friends, I felt like this:

That strip was about as autobiographical as it gets for me. When I said Cyran was a reflection of my insecurities, this was the main strip I was referring to.

This is all building up to what I wanted to talk about this week. Why do I work on this site so much? Heaven knows it’s not because I have a huge following. I wish I did, and I’m slowly (so slowly) working on building one. No, I do it because when I’m drawing a strip or mash-up or writing a story it’s one of the few moments (other than when I’m at work at my paying job) I’m able to stay out of my head. The negative thoughts don’t come as often. I’m happy. That’s what makes this site so important to me and why I want it to succeed. So I can feel justified that all this work I’m putting into it is also being appreciated or enjoyed on some level by others.

It makes me so happy when someone mentions something they read or saw on the site. If they liked it, that’s even better. If you want to make my day, leave a (non-spam) comment on the site. If you see me in public, let me know who your favorite character is and why. I’m always interested in talking about my work with others but I don’t usually initiate though unless there’s something I’m really proud of. Of course, this only works if you sincerely want to know more about the site. If I think you’re just patronizing me, that’ll just send me back into my head.

In the meantime, I’ll write every post as though I have an audience. I’ll ask questions to generate feedback. Someday, somewhere, someone may care what I have to say, so I might as well practice.

Hey all! What up?

I had a lot of fun playing Skylanders Giants this weekend. So far, on the giants side I’m really digging Tree Rex. Trigger Happy and Cynder still rock. I haven’t tried enough of the new characters to decide who I like best. Jet Vac looks cool though.

Reunion Stellaire was this weekend. I’m going to try to focus on the positive here (long story).  I met some great people…and some stars too. Melanie, Alex, Caroline and Marc-Antoine (as well as Mary-Ann from Ottawa), you made my Saturday a lot more fun than it should have been.

Jewel Staite is now minimally aware of Age of Animus’ existence. Jewel is obviously a lot prettier than Adam Baldwin, but I was kind of underwhelmed with my interaction with her which is a shame since I was most looking forward to meeting her. To be honest, she didn’t seem to be into the weekend…at least not the activities which didn’t involve drinking, which are the only activities I attended. I ended up passing up my opportunity to have my picture taken with her (again, long story).

Brandon Routh on the other hand was really nice. I had to pay extra (compared to the other stars in attendance) to get his autograph and a picture with him but he was friendly to me (not that the others weren’t, but Brandon seemed more genuine), which is always appreciated.

It shows that Richard Hatch is a motivational speaker and a teacher. He was the most inspiring of the panelists this weekend. Of course, the others weren’t asked that many questions that lent themselves to inspiring answers but what have you? If I had gone back on Sunday (same long story) maybe I would have had the nerve to challenge him to thumb wrestle (he’s an uncrowned champ at it).

The other stars…were there, (except for Michael Hogan who had to leave early).

In site news, Friday was the reveal of sorts of what Project AW is going to be. Did you check it out? Go ahead and check the archives. I’ll wait. Back? Good. So now you should know that I’m doing a Star Wars parody. Not incredibly inventive, but I hope you enjoy it.

So that’s all for this week. See you all next week!

That’s right, I’m on Twitter now. You can follow my nonsensical musings at James Larochelle @AgeofAnimus. Go on! Follow me. None of the cool kids are doing it.

Okay, shameless social media plugging completed, what’s there to talk about this week?

I hope everybody is enjoying the current Funnies storyline. It’s one of my favorites so far. That’s not saying much, because I’m the creator of the strip and it would make no sense for me to say “This current storyline is garbage…please read it!”

Reunion Stellaire is this weekend. If you’re in the Trois-Rivieres area, you should definitely check it out. To paraphrase Wyld Stallyns, tt should be a most excellent time! For more info, check out http://www.reunionstellaire.com/en/index.html

Last week I was under the mistaken impression that Skylanders Giants comes out next week. I found out this weekend that it comes out…wait a second…October 21st was YESTERDAY! Okay, somehow I thought that the 21st was Tuesday. There are Skylanders to be had…and I do not have them! Curses! This needs to be rectified. I *thought* it was odd that so many eBay sellers had Giants merchandise on sale yesterday. I thought there were stores who broke street.

Okay, well, I’ve lost my train of thought. I’m gonna stop now. Believe it or not I won’t be going to pick up Skylanders Giants tonight. Hopefully tomorrow as was my original plan. Wednesday at the latest,

Peace y’all!

Don’t worry, the titling isn’t becoming a thing. I just didn’t have anything better for this week.

First off, a birthday shout-out to my sister Tammy who turns my age + 4 today (don’t wanna embarrass her by stating the actual number).

I am SOOOPER tired today. The phone rang at 4am this morning. Who could be calling me at that hour? Could it be some big European Syndicate calling to negotiate lucrative publishing deals for Age of Animus? No (but that would have been awesome). It was the security alarm company calling with a recorded message about the power outage last night. This message apparently couldn’t wait until a sane hour. Now granted I didn’t know at the time it was 4am. My alarm clock was blinking 12:00 (power outage and all). I went downstairs to check what time it was so I could reset said alarm. I also clocked my head pretty good on the protruding corner of the closet in my computer room. The bottom line is that my sleep was not as restive as I could have hoped.

ANYHOO

I hope everybody enjoyed the rejected funnies ideas last week. It was fun to come up with new designs for the characters. Granted I do a lot of that in the mash-ups, but these were all-new ideas.

You’d think with Comic-Con being over and the site’s birthday passed I’d have nothing else to look forward to this month, but you’d be wrong!

1) Reunion Stellaire is coming up in less than two weeks. I’ve got my ticket all paid up. Looking forward to meeting Jewel Staite!

2) New Skylanders game at the end of the month. This encouraged me to start playing the original again. I had a lot of Skylanders I hadn’t tried yet. I got one of the last three I was missing in the mail today and the other two are on their way. Woot!

I think that’s all I got in me this week. Maybe next week I’ll be less sleepy. Peace y’all!
