Did you know it’s Friday? That’s right. All day. I know this because it’s Flashback Friday time. By its very name, Flashback Friday occurs on a Friday, so for me to post one on any other day but a Friday would be insane. Not a very dangerous type of insanity, mind you, but crazy nonetheless.

I did my first Indiana Jones mash-ups just as I was starting to change my approach to drawing mash-ups. When compared to the earlier stuff, they’re leaps and bounds ahead, but still lacking compared to the stuff that I did shortly afterwards. This is the last of the themes I want to revisit at this point. The stuff that came after is either good enough to not need revisiting or not something I desperately want to reprove myself on. With all that said, let’s get to it!

As this will most likely be the only time I revisit Indy, I wanted to do something special. That’s why I decided to do the idol scene from the beginning of Raiders. At first it was only going to be Oonch in front of the idol. Then I lost my mind and did a whole temple backdrop for the piece. I don’t feel like I’m very good at drawing backgrounds so I don’t often get tempted to draw them. There are a few nitpicky details that bother me. I wasn’t able to draw a convincing cobblestone floor, so it’s more of a paved look. Oonch should really be standing more behind the pedestal, but I wanted to see more of his costume. Also, and this is purely from a scene-accuracy standpoint, in Raiders, Indy rubs his chin and THEN pulls the pouch of sand out of his bag to measure some out whereas I combined both actions in the same pose. I originally had Oonch holding the sand pouch, but it looked clunky so I changed it to him spilling some sand. These minor nitpicks aside, I really like how it turned out. I think it’s the most complete piece I’ve done. Be sure to click on the picture to enlarge it.

Here’s Oonch by himself and the pedestal by itself.

And here they are recomped so that Oonch is standing more behind the pedestal. It turns out I wouldn’t have lost much of the costume after all. 🙂

Finally, here’s the comparison with the original piece. Looking back, the whip was really bad. I think I did a much better job with the stubble on Oonch’s face too. And hey! He has legs now!

That’s all for this week! Next week we’ll be going back to the DC Universe.
