Flashback Friday – Han Solo

Have you checked your calendar lately? It’s Thursday and that means time for some mash-uppy goodness!

I’m dipping back into the Star Wars theme this week.

For those of you who don’t know the story, I cast Zoë as Han because she’s a pilot of sorts and with Nektara playing Luke, it made more sense for Han to be a girl as well. Here she is wearing Han’s blue jacket from The Empire Strikes Back. The pose is from when Han arrives on Cloud City and holds his arms out to greet Lando. It’s a simple pose but it allows to see the whole costume which is a plus. I tried adding a few more wrinkles to the clothing to mimic the style I remember from the old Galaxy Guides from West End Games. I wanted to say it was Al Williamson, but Wookieepedia only credits Ralph McQuarrie. I just went upstairs to check my copy and Al Williamson was indeed one of the artists along with Michael Manley. Al Williamson is THE artist I think of when I think Star Wars comics. He’s one of the few comic artists whose work I can easily recognize. If I learned anything from him it would be a good thing!

Here’s the comparison with the original mash-up. Poor Zoë always seemed to get the worst of the early mash-ups. Her ears and nose were big problems. I’ve gotten a better handle on her now.

Krull – Kegan

It’s that time of week again! I believe our forefathers used to call it Mash-up Wednesday. It’s a day rich in mash-uppy tradition.

We’re still in Krull mode here. As always, click on the picture to enlarge it.

Krull was the first movie I ever saw Liam Neeson in. If you had told me back in 1983 that he’d go on to become one of the most famous actors in the world, I wouldn’t have believed you. Kegan’s role was small, but I took a shine to him. He was just the right amount of charming for an escaped outlaw. My favorite line of his was when Colwyn was trying to recruit Torquil and his men and had just given his heartfelt plea. Kegan’s response was “Noble sentiments, but we fight for profit, you know what I mean?” This is Kegan from that scene, leaning up against the canyon wall. I intended to give Barnaby a beard like Kegan’s, but I forgot about it when I was colouring. I like him better without it.

Flashback Friday – Star Trek Rad Suit

It’s Friday! Normally, I leave work early on Friday which is nice, but today I have Friday off, which is even better! Sleep in yo! How sad is it though that sleeping in today, meant 8:15? Maybe I couldn’t sleep a minute longer knowing that I had a flashback to share. Yeah, that must be it!

I try to spread out the flashbacks a little amongst the various themes and characters. For this week’s theme, I felt it was time to revisit Star Trek again and to feature Deema. So, hey, whaddya know? It’s Deema in her Star Trek costume!

I’ve said before that I felt that Star Trek II featured the best uniforms in the whole franchise. That statement wasn’t limited to the standard crewmen uniforms, but the engineering unis as well. One I especially liked was the radiation suits that they wore. When my Deema as a Gorn piece turned out so bad I didn’t even want to share it, I fell back on this uniform for her mash-up.

Here’s the comparison piece. I think it’s one of the more striking comparisons. I’m so much happier with my linework now. The curves and circles especially are so much smoother. I also no longer feel the need to colour in white sections with an off-shade. The shading gives enough texture to set apart the costume from the white background.

Krull – Noclops

Wednesday! A day of reckoning! A day of mash-ups!

The Krull theme is still going strong. I’ve got a few more weeks to go before I finish all the characters I want to do. As always, click on the picture to enlarge it.

Here we see Big Oonch as the Cyclops. Was there any doubt that Oonchie would be the one to play a character who’s missing an eye? Cyclops wears a lot of fuzzy gear and the shading was a little more challenging for it.

Next week, Barnaby joins the cast of Krull. Who will he be playing? That will be answered next Wednesday!

Flashback Friday: Catfeline

Hey-hi-ho! Whaddya know? It’s Friday yo! Flashback time go!

Last week’s hint was that this week’s installment wouldn’t be purr-fect but that it would still be pretty sweet. Sass should have seemed like a safe bet. And what character was known for using the purr-fect pun? Why Catwoman (the Adam West Batman version) of course! And didn’t Sass play Catwoman that one time? Why yes she did! Mystery solved! As always, click on the pics you’d like to see enlarged.

I chose to go with the New 52 Catwoman costume this time around. It occurred to me that it’d be really hard for Sass to fit her tail in the costume and I considered having her tail be uncovered, but I didn’t like how it looked, so I chose to make it black like the rest. I had a picture to use as reference for the pose, but I still struggled mightily with her legs, particularly the left. In the reference pic, Catwoman’s right boot reaches to her mid-calf, but the left boot doesn’t look like it extends past her ankle. I was unable to reconcile the two so I fudged it.

Here’s the comparison piece. When I was drawing Iron Cat, I realized that if Sass were wearing a mask, the fur on the sides of her face would be pushed together instead of remaining in two separate tufts. I applied the same principle here. In the original drawing I chose to make the Catwoman a little more purplish because I wanted the line work to show through and there’s a precedent for Catwoman wearing purple. With the way I shade things now, I’m more comfortable using black to colour.
