Flashback Friday – Oonchie LaForge

It’s Thursday night as I write this, but it’ll be Friday morning when this goes live. Fridays are for flashbacks. Let’s flash!

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the star ship Enterprise, its continuing mission to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before.

That’s right. It’s Star Trek time again. And here we have Big Oonch as Geordi LaForge. As always, click on a picture to enlarge it.

Here’s the comparison with the original piece. Back in the early days, I thought Oonch should have two little hairs sticking out. Now I like him “bald”. The long tunic versions of costumes didn’t work as well for Oonch and Cyran since they’re so short and we never saw their legs.

It’s Wednesday and my workplace is open (this was an issue yesterday due to the power going out). Time to post a mash-up and then go to work.

It’s Barnaby’s turn to shine this week (cuz he’s metal, get it?)! Sometimes the proportions of my characters make it challenging to reproduce poses. Most character designs (including the Teen Titans) start wide at the shoulder and narrow at the waist. My characters have no shoulders to speak of and wide waists. If the character I’m covering has shoulder pads or something along those lines (like Cyborg does) it makes it a little easier. As always, you can click on the picture to enlarge it.

Flashback Friday – Lady Jaye

I was in the sleep zone. I didn’t want to wake up this morning. But here I am all the same. Let’s try to get past this with a flashback, alright? Cool.

Whenever I sit down to draw a flashback the first thing I do is look back at which characters have been featured the least and then choose which themes those characters have left to be revisited to decide what I most want to draw. This week it was Sass’s turn and I chose to do her G.I.Joe flashback.

I briefly dallied with the idea of switching characters for Sass’s flashback. I thought I might go with a more recent addition to the Joe team, Agent Helix. I thought I might be able to do something nice with that costume but there was no artwork I wanted to base myself on for it, so I decided to stick with Lady Jaye. Lady Jaye’s original action figure wore a cap. In the cartoon, they decided, for the better, to ditch that element. I drew Sass first without the cap, but then to better reflect the card art, I added a layer for the cap. I like her better without. What do you think?

It’s already Wednesday? I guess that’s what happens when your work week starts on Tuesday! Let’s do this right with a mash-up!

You know Todrick is dedicated to playing a character when he colours his fur. This pose was kinda tricky but I think it all came together in the end.

Flashback Friday – Green Lantern

Howdy folks! It’s Friday morning and I’m off work. How wonderful is that? So wonderful that I decided to share a flashback with you! “Uh, Carja, you share a flashback with us EVERY Friday…” Well sure, but today I mean it!

This week is all about DC Comics. Wednesday we looked at the new Teen Titans theme and today it’s a flashback of the most colourful franchise in the DC Universe. (As always, click on any picture to enlarge it.)

Orange Rich is the greediest of the bunch and so he joins the other Orange Lanterns for lunch!

The Green Lantern costume was pretty simple to draw so I decided to use all the time I saved drawing it (and more) to colour Rich as a member of each of the different Lantern Corps other than Black (because I don’t do zombies) and White (because I didn’t do Black). It made for a LOT of layers. Still, I wanted to do at least one Lantern construct. That’s why I added one more layer so that Green Rich could wield Hal Jordan’s patented boxing glove construct.
