It’s Wednesday. The first work day of the week for me. What’s even better is that Thursday will be the last work day of the week. Two-day work week! Aww yeah! Let’s get this day rolling with a mash-up. But first:

Ranma 1/2 is an anime that is aimed at an older audience. The mash-ups featured here are 100% safe for children of all ages, but parental discretion is advised before viewing the anime or reading the manga with children.

“When he’s a boy, she just wants him. When he’s a girl, she wants him dead.”

That sums up the early relationship between Ranma and Shampoo, a Chinese Amazon who follows female Ranma (she doesn’t know about male Ranma) back to Japan in order to kill her to restore Shampoo’s reputation after being defeated by Ranma in a fight, as decreed by her tribe’s traditions. When MALE Ranma accidentally defeats Shampoo in combat, she falls in love with him, again as per the traditions of her tribe. It’s okay to be defeated by an outsider, so long as he’s male. When she finds out the truth that male and female Ranma are one and the same, she runs off in tears. When she returns, she has her very own Jusenkyo curse. She turns into a cat when splashed with cold water. How fortunate that Ranma is terrified of cats, right?

Casting Sass as Shampoo was a no-brainer for me. Shampoo turns into a cat! After finishing the theme however, I wonder if it might have been better to have Sass dress up as Ukyou instead. I’ll talk more on why when I get to Ukyou. For now, back to Shampoo. I knew I wanted to feature the outfit Shampoo wears the first time we meet her. Little did I know how difficult it would be to find a GOOD picture of it. It’s not her most popular look so none of the promo art for the show has her in it. I had to rely on screen captures from the episodes. I went with my own pose as a result. With that said, here Sass is with both her normal and anime-inspired faces.

That’s all for this week. Next week, we meet another member of the Chinese Amazon tribe.

Whoops! Forgot to post a blog yesterday. There was a point in the day where I said to myself, I need to write something but then I never went back and actually did and therefore…no blog.

Back during the holidays, I drew a picture of the whole cast hugging each other which was the most complicated piece I’d drawn for the strip yet. This past weekend I completed a strip which wasn’t as complicated but was certainly ambitious. It was for the 300th strip which pops up next Tuesday. It took me all week to finish, working a little bit each night. On Saturday I put everything together and drew the rest of the strip. I estimate the one panel took me about ten hours or so to draw in all which is about the time it took me to draw Steampunk Barnaby (the most intricate of the mashups).

What’s so special about the panel? Well, I don’t want to spoil it but there are 32 separate elements in it. I drew one big sketch in MyPaint with several pencil layers and then saved each layer separately and broke each down into several groupings of layers. When they were all done I used Photoshop to rearrange them all more tightly together since in the original sketch I tried to avoid overlapping too much. We’ll talk more in a couple of weeks when the strip is posted.

Today is the last day of my first four-day weekend of the summer. I still have one more strip to draw since I let myself get behind due to the work involved in the 300th strip and you know, wanting to take it easy. Next weekend should run a lot smoother and hopefully I’ll get down to working on some other projects.

Anyhoo, that’s all for now. This week’s first strip will be going up shortly. I wanted to post things in order which meant writing a blog first. Have a good week y’all.
