Power Rangers – Red (Rich) Ranger

It be that time of week again. Time for the Wednesday Mash-up! Enjoy folks!

This week a new theme starts. A theme with power, a theme with  range, a theme that does not err. That’s right. It’s morphin’ time! Did I get that last part right? At any rate, this week we start the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, or just the Power Rangers for short. For the record, I’ve never seen a complete episode of the show. I just thought some of you out there might enjoy the theme.

Who else to be the Red Ranger, but Red Rich? This was a tricky pose. I’m not satisfied with the way the legs turned out, but it was the best I could manage so they’ll have to do. I have no if I drew the right buckle for this specific costume, but it turns out you can’t really see the details anyway. No helmets because I learned with past mash-ups that there’s little use saying it’s a mash-up if you can’t see who’s wearing the costume, tail not withstanding. Flashback Friday – Hawkeye

Greetings Friday Fans! It’s your favorite day of the week and here I am ready to do my best to make Friday just a little bit better with a Flashback.

It’s Red Rich as Hawkeye this week. Hawkeye is one of my favorite Marvel characters if only because he’s an archer. Normally Todrick would have been the one to play the archer, but at the time I had just drawn him as Green Arrow recently and wanted to try something different. I played around with light sources this week based on the original picture of Hawkeye I used as a model for the pose and costume. It looked like there was one light below and to the right and another above and to the left, so that’s what I tried to do here. Red Rich has never looked as muscular. And here’s the comparison to the original picture. The original costume was fairly detailed for what I was doing at the time but no drawstring on the bow.

Ranma 1/2 – Ukyou Kuonji

Heyhey! It’s Wednesday and the week is half over. Just breezes by when I’m on a three-day workweek schedule. It’s already time for a mash-up but first:

Ranma 1/2 is an anime that is aimed at an older audience. The mash-ups featured here are 100% safe for children of all ages, but parental discretion is advised before viewing the anime or reading the manga with children.

That’s the last time I have to put up that warning as this is the last week of the Ranma theme!

Ukyou is yet another of Ranma’s would-be fiancés although she at least can argue that she has a legitimate claim. Back when Ranma was a little boy he used to spar with “Ucchan” every morning. If he won (and he always did) he’d win an okonomiyaki (think a Japanese style pizza creation) breakfast. Ukyou’s father offered Ranma’s father his okonomiyaki cart as a dowry if he agreed to Ranma and Ukyou becoming betrothed to one another. Genma ran off with the cart and left Ukyou behind. Years later, Ukyou returns to find justice by defeating Ranma but ends up falling in love with him. Ranma calls her “the cute fiancé”.

Here we have Deema as Ukyou in regular and anime-style face. I said in my Shampoo post that as I was drawing this piece I thought that Sass would have been better for Ukyou. That’s because of the costume. Sass has more human proportions with longer limbs than the other characters. Shampoo’s costume didn’t really need those longer limbs to look right but it turns out Ukyou’s does. I had to cheat a little with the proportions to make things look right.

Flashback Friday – Romulan Zoë

It’s Friday folks! I’m going to Quebec City today. But before that can happen we have to start our Friday right with a flashback!

When I drew the first Star Trek mash-ups back in 2012, I thought it’d be nice to feature the uniforms from each of the different time periods we see in the various Trek shows and movies. When I got to Barnaby and Zoë, I’d run out of uniforms. I didn’t want to do the variants of the Next Generation uniforms as appear in Deep Space Nine and Voyager. I therefore chose to do a Romulan uniform for Zoë and a Klingon uniform for Barnaby. I wasn’t keen on redoing the Romulan uniform but it turned out alright. I’m not crazy about the colour. This is one of those pieces where it may be worth clicking to enlarge just to see the detailing on the belt and buckles.

Here’s the comparison to the original piece. I prefer the metallic sheen on the original piece actually. The stills from the show I used for the new piece showed that the actual uniforms were made of cloth, not metal like the design sketch I used to base myself on for the original.

Ranma 1/2: Mousse

It’s Wednesday and I’m dog-beat tired. I had a lot of trouble falling asleep with the loud wind last night and I got woken up over an hour earlier than expected by my cat. Joy. Let’s try to wake ourselves up with a mash-up huh? But first:

Ranma 1/2 is an anime that is aimed at an older audience. The mash-ups featured here are 100% safe for children of all ages, but parental discretion is advised before viewing the anime or reading the manga with children.

Mousse is a guy from Shampoo’s village of Chinese amazons who’s been in love with Shampoo since childhood. Unfortunately for him, Shampoo just doesn’t love him back (though it turns out she does care for him). He’s the master of hidden weapons, able to strike with multiple weapons (some unconventional) hidden within his robes. He’s also extremely short-sighted. Without his glasses, he can’t tell Shampoo from Cologne (her great-grandmother).

Here we have Big Oonch dressed as Mousse. Since he’s wearing the thick glasses, there was no point in drawing an “anime” face, so there’s just the one version this week. Oonch’s legs are too short to do the dynamic fighting stance pose I wanted to, so he’s standing plain. As always, click on the picture to enlarge it.
