I mentioned earlier this week that I used to draw a comic called Fun ‘n’ Fantasy (FnF). It was about a roleplaying group and their wacky misadventures in the world of Rengag. I posted several issues of the comic online back in 1999 (on geocities or some other defunct free website so you can’t find them anymore). I had fun drawing it but once I started working full-time I found I didn’t have the drive to continue the time-consuming process. Of course that was when I’d have to draw the panels, then scan them, then edit them, colour them, and finally add the text. With my drawing pad the process is a lot easier.
Fab told me not too long ago that he’d have liked to see more FnF. Nowadays I’m pretty busy with Age of Animus so a full return of Fun ‘n’ Fantasy doesn’t seem likely. The compromise was a crossover between FnF and AoA, and so the idea has been percolating in my brain. I drew this picture as a teaser for it, even though the actual crossover won’t happen until mid-to-late 2012. I’d been hanging on to it, waiting for the ideal time to announce the crossover and well, that time is NOW! I may look into putting a comic book compilation of the crossover story for sale on in the Age of Animus Cafepress store when it’s done, but that won’t be for some time obviously.
From the journal of Ardebast Raconteur:
The cavernous city complex that is the Burroughs employs many guards to keep watch over the cavern entrance. As a world traveler, I have found that it is good to make friends with as many city guards as possible. It makes gaining access to the various cities and towns easier. Of my friends within the Burroughs guardsfurs, I am closest to an odd character who goes by the name of the Big Oonch. As far as I can tell, it’s a nickname, but I don’t know where it started, or even if he gave it to himself.
Big Oonch is given to talking in the third person. Despite having rarely traveled away from the Burroughs, he conducts himself as a worldly fur. While he is one of the more eccentric furs I’ve ever met, he’s no fool. He knows when he’s in over his head and will cut his losses when necessary.
Carja’s Notes:
Big Oonch first appears in the second of a series of birthday stories I wrote for my friends. His story was written with a noir flavour. I originally considered making him a cat since the person the story was written for loves cats, but I already had a feline character in Sass (who appears in the story), so I decided to try something else, which ended up being a groundhog.
The Funnies version of Big Oonch is a distilled version of the character. I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go with him at first. His vision of himself as a ladies man seemed to have the most comic potential. Even then, I can see that I’ll have to use him sparingly unless I come up with a really good idea for him to keep him from getting stale.
