Flashback Friday – Arrow

Good golly, Miss Molly! It’s Friday! What’s that? You’re not Miss Molly? Oh…well, it’s still Friday.

Last week I said I was pushing the flashback that was supposed to go up then to now. But why? To coincide with the season finale of Arrow. It’s nice how these things work out, huh? I’m really enjoying Arrow. It’s a great take on my favorite superhero, Green Arrow and the producers have been doing a great job of incorporating elements of the DC Universe in interesting ways unlike some other current TV shows based on comic properties.

When it came time to decide what version of Green Arrow I was going to use for the flashback, the Arrow costume was the obvious choice. So here’s Todrick taking aim. As always, you can click on a picture to enlarge it. For comparative purposes I’ve included the original picture of Arrow I based the piece on.

For those of you who were wondering, this is the picture I saved in the wrong format and had to reink and recolour. Below is how the first pass looked like when I stripped the colour from it so I could relayer it. The deterioration of the linework isn’t as obvious in this reduced version. The second attempt turned out better even without taking that into consideration.

And here’s the comparison picture with the original mashup. One thing I was really proud of in the original was the posing. I still think that came out well.

Teen Titans – Group Picture

Here’s the group picture of the Animus cast dressed up as the Teen Titans. People who showed up at Zone 51 on Free Comic Book Day were able to walk away with a free postcard of this picture.

The observant amongst you will have noticed that Nektara is looking in the opposite direction here than she was in her picture by herself. The original way made it look like she was looking totally elsewhere than the rest of the crew. Those of you who aren’t observant will have noticed because I just told you.

For comparative purposes, here’s the picture of the real Teen Titans that I based this shot on. For those wondering, Nektara’s hood is down because I wanted her face to be visible. I don’t think the picture would have turned out well if I had drawn the hood up anyway.

It’s already Wednesday? I guess that’s what happens when your work week starts on Tuesday! Let’s do this right with a mash-up!

You know Todrick is dedicated to playing a character when he colours his fur. This pose was kinda tricky but I think it all came together in the end.

No, you’re not imagining things! The Wednesday Mash-up is back with NEW mash-ups! This past weekend I got a surge of creative energy and I decided I wanted to do something new. Flashback Fridays will still be an ongoing feature. This just means TWO mash-ups per week instead of just one! What a bargain!!!

I don’t remember which came first this weekend: the idea to draw a Krull mash-up or the (unsuccessful) search to find a quality replica of the Glaive at a price I was willing to pay. One thing’s for sure, one definitely had an impact on the other. Whichever came first, the result is this week’s new mash-up! Let’s get to it! As always, you can click on a picture to embiggen it.

I chose Todrick for the role of Colwyn because I thought the red fur would add some nice colour to the mostly black costume. The biggest challenge was to find quality reference pics online. I ended up needing several. I like to think the end result was worth the searching.

I’m not done with Krull yet. I was in a Krull mood after finishing this piece so I put the DVD in the ol’ PS3 and watched it, keeping an eye out for good shots I could use as references for future mash-ups. If I could find that Glaive, I might even be tempted to try my hand at cosplay again.

Flashback Friday – Rick and Red’s Excellent Adventure

You know what day it is, I know what day it is, let’s not play any games with each other and just get to the flashback, shall we?

I’ve been revisiting themes in the original order they first appeared on the site. Next on the list was Bill and Ted. All the pictures are embiggenable. Just click on them.

Bill and Ted was a small theme the first time around so it was likely this flashback was going to be the only time I revisited it. It made sense then that both Bill and Ted would be featured. Because I like Bogus Journey more than Excellent Adventure, I considered going with the movie poster that featured Bill, Ted and the Grim Reaper pressed up against a pane of glass. I love that poster. …But it wasn’t full body. I flipped through some pictures online and decided to be ambitious and try the original movie poster or at least the main element of Bill and Ted sitting on top of the phone booth. As I went along, I decided to just do the whole thing. I even added the caption and some “credits”. My character’s dimensions meant I had to lay things out a little differently but honestly, I’m extremely proud of the way it turned out.

I wrote about the trials and tribulations of the picture here. To get an idea, on the left is an approximation of how far I’d gotten when Paint crashed, compared to the finished picture (sans space and text) to the right and the uncoloured picture underneath:

If you’re thinking to yourself, “Gee, you didn’t have very much left to do.” then you can imagine how devastating it was for me to lose all my progress. I’m just glad I ended up with a backup I could use. I know for sure I wouldn’t have had the stomach to start the whole thing over from scratch.

Finally are the comparisons to the original pieces. I remember that the originals were the first time I drew proper sleeves for the shirts the characters were wearing. They weren’t as bad as some of the earlier pieces, but my lines were a lot shakier. One of my big goals is to work on my brush strokes.
