“Why do I feel this way?” It’s a question I ask myself on a regular basis. I become disappointed easily. I have a hard time forgiving people when I feel slighted. I don’t feel comfortable maintaining eye contact. I wonder about how others view me all the time.

For a while now, I’ve been wondering if I have a light case of asperger syndrome. It made sense. A couple of weeks ago, I was watching Parenthood (one of my favorite shows) and Hank, the character played by Ray Romano, wonders if he might have had asperger’s syndrome his whole life without knowing that’s what made certain social situations so difficult for himself. I saw a little of myself in the character.

When these thoughts arise, I usually think to myself that I don’t remember things being so bad when I was younger. Is it possible I DEVELOPED Asperger’s Syndrome? Is that a thing? Or is it a social anxiety disorder? Am I a sociopath? What’s wrong with me?

Today I did a little online reading. Just to know if there’s anything to it. Some of what I read I felt applies to me. Others less so. So I didn’t find the answer I was looking for. But would knowing that I did have Asperger’s or a social anxiety disorder even make a difference? I’m wary of self-diagnoses because it’s not always easy to be completely honest with one’s self. Is a person just ascribing these symptoms on themselves because they’ve convinced themselves that it’s easier to just say, “Oh, that’s my Asperger’s talking.”

I’ll never really know for sure what my problem is unless I consult an expert and that’s something I’m not prepared to do. So I’ll just wonder.

Sorry for the head trip this week. I didn’t have a great weekend and it’s been weighing on my mind all day. It’s not the first time I’ve written a downer of a blog like this and it’s likely not the last. I hope to have something more upbeat to talk about next week! Have a good one y’all!

Hey folks! Did everyone enjoy the Super Bowl? I had a nice evening with my friends, but the football game had little to do with it. It was really bad.

I stayed up way too late on Friday and Saturday and I’m still feeling the effects today so I have a feeling today’s blog is going to be short again (sorry).

The bandits are starting to show up. I’ll be talking more about them when they’re all introduced.

I got an influx of traffic (for this site) last week. I posted links to the Wakfu mash-ups on the Wakfu dub Kickstarter…and people actually came to see what I’d done! Imagine that! I haven’t received any feedback and I don’t think it will result in any return visits but the temporary spike in visits was nice to see. It goes to show that I need to spread the word more. It really works.

I spent very little time at home over the weekend and spent much of the time I did sleeping or working on my quota of strips. I only got the sketch of a mash-up done. I’ll need to work on that this week (although today I feel too wiped).

Still digging Rayman Legends! It’s a game that makes me glad I own a Wii U.

That’s all for this week. Have a good one y’all!

Hey folks! I’m feeling a little under the weather today so I’m going to keep this brief.

This week’s strips pick up where I left off before the Crismus interlude. Finally, we get to see who the mysterious bandits are (it’s not the Pickle Patch Bandits). I’ll speak a little more about them after they’ve all been introduced.

I had a lot of fun using Wilhemina from the Furship Chronicles in this year’s Crismus storyline. I think it worked well for a last minute addition. As I was writing the intro strip, I realized that naturally the gang back home would be worried with their friends being missing for so long. Wilhemina brought in some much needed humour (at least I hope she was funny). I have an idea for a Wilhemina appearance in a storyline down the road so you’ll be seeing her again someday.

At some point our roleplaying group should get back together so we can have more from the Furship. What do you think?

Hey all! I’m writing this week’s blog a week ahead of time. I actually just posted last week’s blog before starting.

So I said last (this) week that I’d talk about how the current storyline evolved the way it did, so let’s get right to it.

I believe I’ve mentioned before that the idea for Zoë to meet a chipmunk and then embark on a quest to find him again actually came to me back in 2011. The original plan was for the quest to be my big summer storyline but since I’m not very good at estimating how much time stories are going to take, it was already the end of August before the first strip of the Search for Skitter was even posted.

The plan was always for Zoë to forget Skitter when her cast was removed. There’d be a few strips  of Zoë trying to remember something important punctuated with a panel of Skitter waiting faithfully for her to come back until finally, Nektara (later changed to Todrick because Nektara is too smart for this to happen) would ask her where Skitter was. That would start the Search for Skitter. As we now know, Skitter’s and Tomaw’s departures are related, so obviously the Tomaw storyline had to conclude before the Search for Skitter could begin. Because I wanted a little bit of time to pass between the two, I couldn’t start the Search for Skitter until the tail end of August. So much for a summer storyline.

When I started late, I decided that it’d be nice to have the story conclude at Crismustime. I had an idea for the returning heroes’ arrival in mind that I liked. That gave me 17 weeks or 34 strips to tell the story of how Zoë finally remembered about Skitter, went to find him and came home.

34 strips seems like a lot, but it’s not. It took 16 strips before Zoë even left Bree. There was NO way that I was going to fit the whole quest into 18 strips. Not without gutting the story. I would have to forget the Crismustime reunion.

Or would I? Time is fluid in the strip. If Zoë and the others left Bree on October 17th (the day the strip of their departure was posted), then two months of in-world time would pass before Crismus’s birthday came around. It occurred to me in early November that come Crismustime, I could skip ahead to tell the homecoming storyline the way I wanted (and WHEN I wanted) and then go back and continue with the rest as something that had already happened (told as a story to the friends back home) instead of something that was taking place, taking as much time as necessary to tell the story.

I sat down and I put down the important plot points I knew I wanted to hit and the rough order they should occur. If I’m perfectly honest with myself, I should have done this much sooner. For over a year I knew I had this big story I wanted to tell, I had a number of gags and absolutely no idea how to fit them all together. I’d like to say I’ve learned from this. I won’t know for sure until I try another storyline this big and who knows when that will be? I have to finish this one first, right? At least at that point I got things together.

But where would I cut the story? I thought the point where Red Rich finds Tomaw and Skitter would be a good place. The storyline was called The Search for Skitter and at that point Skitter is found right?  It sounded good to me so I had my plan. 10 strips to get to a point where Red Rich meets Tomaw and Skitter. Anything that wasn’t essential to getting to that point could be told after the homecoming storyline. I just needed to get to that encounter.

It didn’t fit. Nope. I shifted everything that takes place in the bandit camp to after the break (I’m just now starting to draw that actually) and focused on just Red Rich’s story and still I was a few strips short. That’s when I considered moving up to three strips a week. I calculated and it was tight but I could make it work.

As you can now see, I made it. Red Rich met Tomaw and Skitter on December 17th and on December 24th I started the Crismustime storyline. That was interesting to write in itself, but that’s a story for another time. I’ve rambled on enough for now. Have a good week y’all!

Is it Monday already? He asked, when it was almost Tuesday. Guess I need to blog things up around here.

I bought a Wii U during the Christmas break. It was an impulse buy actually. I saw it on special and bought it. I’m not ready to make the jump to the Playstation 4 and I’ve managed to avoid the X-Box’s other iterations so it doesn’t figure in my plans either. The reason I’m bringing this up at all is because I went on a Wii U game buying spree over the weekend. I got Super Mario Bros. U and Super Luigi U with the machine and I picked up Skylanders at the same time because it was 33% off and it assured me of getting the plain versions of Ninja Stealth Elf, Wash Buckler and Blast Zone. This past weekend, I bought THREE games even though when I left the house on Saturday I didn’t think I’d be buying any.

A few weeks ago, I saw that there was a new Pac-Man game (Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures) out but I only saw it for the X-Box 360 and the Wii U (it exists for the PS3 but I didn’t know that until just now when I looked it up). I picked it up for $40 at Toys R Us (since they didn’t have Rayman Legends) only to see it at two other places afterwards for $30. Doh! That was game #1.

I’m a huge DC Comics fan, so when I saw Scribblenauts Unmasked, I was intrigued. Not $60 (the price it was going for at Wal-Mart) intrigued, but perhaps $40 (the price it was going for on amazon.ca) intrigued. Well, at Archambault, they had it for $40 so I pulled the trigger. That was game #2.

The good folks at Penny Arcade hyped Rayman Legends as a perfect way to highlight the Wii U’s gamepad. That put the game on my radar. On Saturday I tried the playable demo at Toys R Us and it blew me away. It may be a sign that I don’t play enough games, but I thought it was one of the most gorgeous looking games I’ve ever played and it was fun to boot! Alas, they didn’t have it in stock. I saw it at Archambault but it was going for $60. That was more than I was willing to pay so I figured I’d forgo it. Then we went to Wal-Mart and I saw it for the PS3 for $20. I thought to myself, “Great! It’s $20 for the PS3 but it’s probably $60 for the Wii U and I really want it for the Wii U!” Well wouldn’t you know, the Wii U version cost the same. That’s as good a price as I could ever hope for so I picked it up post haste. That was game #3.

I tried all three games briefly on Saturday night. None of them required an installation or updates (JOY!) so I was able to pop them in and go which I am a big fan of!

When I started Pac-Man it felt like I was missing something. The characters were referring to things I had never heard of before. As I did a quick search to make sure I got the name right (the game is in the other room and I’m lazy) I saw that there’s a TV series that came out last year. Mystery solved. The game froze when I died and thus ended the quick experiment.I’ll try it again later of course, because I liked what little I had seen of the gameplay before the freeze.

I was just as impressed with Rayman Legends at home as I was when I tried the demo in the store. It really is a great game. But because I wanted to give all three games a try, I didn’t play it for very long.

I’d only briefly played the first Scribblenauts Nintendo DS game before and didn’t remember much. Somehow I had gotten into my head that it involved drawing things. I’m not crazy about the interface to type things in. I guess it goes better with the pen than with my finger. I’ll have to give that a try. It’s the game I played the most (mostly because it was the last one I tried and therefore just left the game in the machine). I love the look of Scribblenauts and they REALLY went deep in incorporating elements of the DC universe. There are a LOT of characters and bios available.

It’s a testament to my resolve that I was able to forgo playing on Sunday until I had drawn both strips for the weekend. I had a mental block when I tried writing strips on Saturday and it wasn’t until Sunday that I was able to figure out how I wanted things to go. We get back to the story of what happened in the wild with Zoë, Red Rich and the others starting on January 28th. I’ll write more about the process in next week’s blog. For now though, I’m done. Have a good week everybody!
