How terrible is it that I’m referring to myself as an “it”? Nah! I’m just funnin’ ya! By saying “it” rather than “I’m” I automatically convey the vibe I want, which is Mad Scientist, rather than I dunno…Ralph Wiggum.

ANYHOO

Did some strip writing yesterday for strips 287 through 292. Every strip I write which isn’t the conclusion to this storyline just makes me realize that much more how insane I was to think that I could ever fit this arc into a three-month period from September to November. I’m EIGHT months in, I’ve drawn or scripted another two months worth of strips and I’m still not at the endgame. I may be looking at a 12 month storyline all told. I look forward to the day when I can read it from beginning to end and see how it plays out as a whole.

Saturday I used Photoshop to design some postcards to hand out on Free Comic Book Day. That’s next Saturday for those of you who enjoy free comic books. It’s something I’d been thinking about for a while figuring I had loads of time to get something ready and then I got a message from Fab on Saturday about going to FCBD and it was like, “Whoa! That’s next weekend!” Staples’ website says I need to allow five to ten business days for my order to be printed. I’m hoping like heck it’s only five otherwise it’ll be too late for FCBD.

I do have the postcards I ordered (too late) for Comiccon last year though, so I won’t be completely empty-handed. Lest you think I didn’t learn ANYTHING from that experience, I did remember to design something for the back of the postcard this time. Last time, I assumed that these being “postcards” the back would be split like a standard mailing postcard (half for the recipient’s address and half for a brief message), and not just completely blank. Knowing that I could use the back for anything, I designed my postcards with a colour print for the front and an ink print for the back. The last three aren’t as elaborate as the others but I still wanted to represent Marvel, Star Trek and Star Wars somehow. Astute readers will notice that there’s a preview of the last three Titans mash-ups in the DC design. Sadly I only remembered after my order was sent that I should have done one for my Oonchiana Jones poster as well, but oh well. That’ll be one for next year!

So if you drop by Zone 51 this Saturday you may have one of these nifty designs to add to your free swag. Assuming I get my order in. Otherwise, you can look forward to a Todrick is Jericho or Codex Sass card.

It was nice while it lasted. I can’t wait for July when ALL my weekends will be four day weekends!

I did some drawing on Saturday, as I am normally inclined to do. It was a new flashback of Todrick as Green Arrow and overall I was pleased with how it turned out. I finished colouring it and only had the shading left to do when I decided I needed to get ready for my upcoming evening of gaming with friends. I saved and went on with the preparations. Later that evening I returned to my computer to read up in the boardgamegeek forums on the game we’d just played (DC Comics Deck-Building Game for the curious). I like to do this while the game is still fresh in my mind so that I can read up on rules questions that came up while we were playing and see what I got wrong (usually quite a bit). An hour or so later, I closed all the windows I had open and went to bed.

On Sunday morning, I opened up MyPaint intent on finishing the mashup. Wait a second…why is there a jpg file there? Where’s my ora file with all the layers? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I believe I mentioned back when I was talking about the trouble I had drawing the Bill and Ted flashback that MyPaint uses a proprietary format known as an .ora (for open raster I believe). It keeps all the layers separate so I can tinker around with them whenever I want (much as one can do in Photoshop). A while back, I changed the settings in MyPaint to make jpegs the default saving format which means that I have to manually switch to ora when I create the file. All nice and good but this time, I wasn’t paying attention and I worked in jpeg the whole time which was fine while MyPaint was open, but when I closed it, all I was left with was the jpeg which merges all the layers together.

I’m really obsessive about my layers because it just makes things so much easier when it comes to cleaning things up (and I do so need to clean things up as I draw). I only had the shading left to do but I wasn’t confident I’d be able to do a good job shading directly over the one layer. Usually I do my colouring and shading in layers under the ink so that the linework is always remains clean on top, untouched by my sloppy colouring and shading techniques.

So what could I do? Well, I am far from adept when it comes to Photoshop so there are probably plenty of ways I could have used to fix things. The best I could think of though was to use the select tool to select the black lines to create a mask which I could then use as a new foundation layer and then create new layers underneath to colour in like I usually do. A nice idea in theory, but the selection wasn’t perfect and the surviving lines weren’t as clean as I’d like them and some lines didn’t survive at all. I would have needed to apply a LOT of touch-ups for it to be usable. I started to do so but found the work really tedious. I decided then that I’d rather re-ink using the original drawing as my “sketch”. So I did. Here’s a comparative selection to show how it went (you’ll need to enlarge the picture by clicking on it to really see what I’m talking about).

Having to redraw the whole thing set me back though. I didn’t draw a second strip this weekend. I’ll need to do so during the week to keep from falling behind (I’ve got a headache today so not in the best headspace to draw). You’ll be able to see whether the extra work was worth it in three weeks when the flashbacks goes live on the site. For now though, have a good week everybody!

I seem to recall that at some point over the weekend a subject occurred to me that I thought would make for a nice topic for discussion in this week’s blog. Well here we are on Monday and I can’t at all remember what that potential subject was. Oh well, no fun blog subjects for you.

I blitzed through Cowboy Bebop over the last two weekends. It still holds up as a great series. When Call Me, Call Me starts up at the end of Episode 24 …it still gets me (I’m listening to it as I’m writing this). Deema fans should know that if it weren’t for Edward, we wouldn’t have our favorite scaley today.

I’ve been drawing a lot of Mudd these last couple of weeks. I think I’m getting a handle on him. If there’s one thing I’m looking forward to finishing up the current storyline though, it’s that the entire main cast will be available to be featured.

Not much else to discuss this week. I’ll try to think of (and remember) a better topic for next week’s blog.

So sleepy.

Last night was Wrestlemania 30 (or as Fab called it “Luchamania”). It was the first wrestling PPV we watched together in years! Also joining us for her first wrestling show was Lyne. Daniel Bryan finally got his moment and it was the end of an era as, in the shocker of the evening, the Undertaker’s undefeated streak came to an end at the hands of Brock Lesnar. My man Cesaro won the inaugural Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royale in grand fashion by bodyslamming Big Show (a man who’s billed as weighing in excess of 450 lbs) over the top rope. It was a fun time.

Less fun was what happened on my way home after the show. Fab lives at the bottom of a hill and I live at the top. As I was walking up, I could see smoke coming from the general direction of my neighbourhood. Now, I’m not at all in shape, so there was no way I was going to be able to RUN up the hill, but I did walk faster than usual. Third avenue was blocked off by the emergency vehicles so I had to walk around the scene before I could confirm that it was the duplex on the next street that was on fire and not my house. Past midnight the firefighters were still working on the scene. Quite scary for me, but nowhere as scary as I imagine it was for the people who lived there.

These two events combined made for a short night and thus my fatigue today.

Earlier in the day we went to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It was a solid movie that I greatly enjoyed. Even though we saw Cap in Avengers, this was the movie that really brought Captain America into the modern era. It also bodes well for Agents of SHIELD which has mostly been a disappointment this season. Things are going to get intense!

Hey Animusians! Animusiasts? Animusicians? Animites? Your pick!

Yesterday we were “blessed” with another huge snow fall. The thing that annoys me the most about this is that it pushes back the date where I can finally take Speedy out for a spin. (Speedy being my bicycle for those of you just tuning in). My last bike ride was back in November, so I’m looking forward to being able to do some pedaling again.

Last week I finally finished the Krull mash-ups. As much as I love the movie, after six weeks I was ready for a change. This weekend I started working on a new theme which will be showing up in three weeks.

This weekend was also a big weekend for Skylanders. I found every single character I was missing from waves 2, 3 and 4. Excluding exclusive variants, I’m missing three basic figures: Doom Stone, Base Set Smolderdash and Lightcore Bumble Blast, none of which have been released yet (to my knowledge). Until Skylanders 4 comes out in October. 🙂

Wrestlemania 30 is this Sunday! I’ve been watching since shortly after Wrestlemania 2. Man that makes me feel old!

That’s all I’ve got for now! Have a good week y’all!
