Hey, it just turned Friday and here I am posting the Friday Flashback! Normally I’d be asleep, but thus is the fun of being on vacation.

This week’s flashback revisits the Real American Hero, G.I.JOE. As much as possible I want to give each member of the main cast a chance to be in a flashback. That’s one of the main reasons why I chose Big Oonch this week.

In the original JOE mash-ups I cast Oonch as Sci-Fi because I like Sci-Fi and he’s a character whose visor covers his eyes. The JOE team has so many characters to choose from however, that I wanted to use somebody different to keep things fresh for myself. I dallied with the idea of drawing Oonch as Lowlight, but ultimately I went with Gung-Ho. I like how he turned out. As much as possible, the first time around, I tried to use the original JOE card art as a basis for my pictures and I continued that trend here. I really struggled with the chest tattoo so I went with my own (much simpler) design for it. If you’re wondering, the B is for the Burroughs, which is where Big Oonch is from. Oonch and Cyran present a particular challenge in that their legs are so short. I think his shortness comes across.

And here’s the comparison with the original Oonch-JOE mash-up.

That’s it for this week. Next week, it’s KITTY (COBRA)’s turn. Until then, have a good week!

Hello and good day to you friends! It be Friday and that can only mean a new Flashback! Let us see what we shall see, shall we?

So this week, we jump back to the release of the Avengers and the set of mash-ups I drew based on the designs featured in the movie.

For the first look back at the Avengers, I decided to go with Sass as Iron Cat since I hadn’t featured any redoes of Sass designs yet. The first time around, I had her holding the Iron Man helmet. This time I simply used layers to draw her with and without the helmet on. My characters don’t have fingers so I tried to include a paw pad on the power gloves. I’ll say that making things look “techy” still isn’t a strong suit but the result is still striking to me. As always, you can click on any picture to embiggen it.

Here’s the comparison with the original. You’ll notice that this time I remembered to give her a tail. I also chose a different armor design. There have been so many. Sass is more serious about being Iron Cat this time around or has she become blasé?

So that’s all for this week. Next week, is a look at a real American hero (even if I’m Canadian).

Well look at that! It’s Friday, time for another flashback!

This week it’s a look back at Star Trek.

The uniforms worn in Star Trek II through Star Trek VI are my favorite uniforms in Star Trek. They may even be my favorite uniforms from any movie. Definitely up there in the top five at any rate. When I was going to revisit the Star Trek theme therefore, there was little doubt which uniform I’d redo first. I think this is the first time I’ve managed to have both feet pointing in the same direction where I’ve been happy with the results. It was actually important to me that I get to do the stripe on the dress pants so I needed that to work out. As always, you can click on the pictures to embiggen.

And here’s the comparison with the original. The most glaring thing about the old one is the collar.

Okay so that’s all for this week. Live long and prosper! Will there be another flashback next week? Maaaaaaaybe!

Woo! Friday has not arrived too soon! And with Friday comes flashback mash-ups!

This week we get zapped back into the computer world of Tron! To change things up a little though, I decided to feature designs from Tron Legacy rather than the original movie.

As I was browsing through pictures from the movie trying to find a striking pose to recreate, I came upon one of the movie posters which itself was an homage to the original movie and decided that was the one to go with. Because of Cyran’s short height however, I had to give him a little boost, which is why he’s standing on a pedestal.  I could have gone with someone taller, like Todrick who would have made sense because he’s Nektara’s boyfriend, or Red Rich, since he was Flynn in the original set and Tron Legacy features Flynn’s son, but with Cyran being the one who receives the energy wrench (disk) in the original set, I chose him to be featured again in this piece. I went with Nektara because she was featured in the original set and her hair matches up well with Quorra’s. As always, click on the picture to zoom in.

I don’t usually link the original picture I used as a model, but in this case, I’m including it just to compare.

And while we’re comparing things, here are comparisons to the original Tron mash-ups!

So that’s it for this week! Next week is another sci-fi staple! Peace out!

TGIFF! That’s right, thank goodness it’s a Flashback Friday!

As I said in Monday’s blog, today’s flashback is from Star Wars. It’s Nektara as Luke Skywalker in Bespin fatigues as shown in the Empire Strikes Back. It’s perhaps the least iconic look of anything Luke wears but I liked the publicity shot that was taken of him in it. As always click on the picture to see a close-up.

One thing about how this picture turned out. Every time I look at it, it seems to me like her nose is floating above her face because of the way I shaded it. I was soft on the details of the blaster but I think it turned out okay. I noticed a couple of things about the costume as I was drawing it, like the fact that there’s a kind of canvas covering over part of the boots and how many empty pockets Luke had.

Here’s the comparative shot of Nektara as Luke then and now (again you can click on the picture for a close-up):

That’s it for this week’s flashback. Next week, we return inside the computer!
