It’s Monday and it’s time to blog. Alas, I have no subject upon which to blog this day.

“Does this differ from any of the myriad other times you have blogged”

I guess not.

I finished the lastof the 80’s Toys mash-ups on Sunday. I’m closing out with Big Oonch this time around and he really came out nice. I think he’s the star of the set. I look forward to sharing him with you in a few weeks. For now though, it’s time to come up with a new theme. Any suggestions?

I bought the Blackrock Mountain adventure pack in Hearthstone on Saturday. I felt it was easier than the Naxxramas pack. I barely had to do any deck adjustments to go through them. I still had trouble with the final boss because I couldn’t wrap my mind around the three phases in that match. I checked out Youtube for some ideas and immediately I felt dumb for not thinking of them sooner.

Playing DDO is somewhat scratching my D&D itch, but I still really want to play the pen and paper way. I ventured into a level 9 adventure on Sunday and woo boy! There were Beholders (note the pluralized form) and I died several times leading up to the final encounter. In the final encounter my cleric hireling also died so that meant no more resurrection spells. I’m so close to level 11, I’ll try again after leveling up.

I’m tapped out for topics to discuss so I guess I’ll finish up quicker than usual. Anybody have any questions for me? Feel free to ask in the comments.

Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V.

Hello and welcome. It’s time for the blog. I’m going to get right to it.

The Peanuts Movie came out on Friday. As a lifelong fan of the strip and animated specials, whose own style is greatly influenced by the works of Charles Schulz, there was little question that I was going to see it on opening weekend. In fact, I saw it on opening night.

Before I go into my thoughts, I’m going to put a few things into context. First of all, I was dog tired when I saw the movie. On Thursday night I stayed up well past midnight watching Critical Role and I was up the next morning at 6am. I went to work until 1pm and then spent the afternoon with my mom as I do every Friday. We had lunch and played board games until 6pm then it was off to the theatre to see the movie at 7. I do believe that my fatigue kept me from enjoying the movie as much as I possibly could have.

Second, as a lifelong fan, I was obviously bringing in a lot of past experience with the franchise with me into the theatre room. I *KNOW* Peanuts (like how Charle Schulz HATED that name). I will do well in most Peanuts trivia quizzes. That brings a certain amount of expectation to the movie. Some is fair, some probably isn’t. Regardless, I was a little apprehensive when I went in. I wanted very much to like the movie, but I wasn’t sure I would be able to.

With that said, I will say that I liked the movie for what it was. Was it the Peanuts experience I was hoping it would be? No, but then it really had no chance of being so. It did a very good job of trying though.

I think Schulz was a genius of his medium with a unique voice. His son has tried to carry on the Peanuts legacy with comic books (Schulz stated in his will that he did not want the newspaper strip to continue without him), but to my mind, the voice of his work has been just off. The same holds true for his son’s efforts with the movie.

In reading Peanuts, I never got the impression that Charles Schulz was writing for kids. He was writing a strip that was about kids that kids could enjoy but with a sensitivity that could appeal to adults. The movie, I feel, was aimed squarely at kids which is the same criticism I have for the comic books. I accept that the creators of the movie felt it was necessary to reinvigorate the franchise and it doesn’t bother me. They just went a little too slapstick as an easy laugh for my tastes (particularly how the school dance sequence ends).

I’m not going to delve to deeply into the story. For the most part, they get it right. Charlie Brown just wants to win at something so he can impress the Little Red-Haired Girl who moved in across the street. You root for him the whole time as you should. A slight criticism is that we spend too little time with the other characters. Except for Lucy, who sort of serves as the movie’s antagonist (I say sort of because it felt to me like part of Lucy’s role was cut from the final film), everybody else pretty much comes in for a trademark gag and then they’re gone. I get that it’s Charlie Brown’s movie, but I love these characters so much. I would have liked to see more of them.

The animation is wonderful. I loved the thought balloon flashbacks that were presented in traditional 2D animation style and I would have gladly sat through a movie done in that style but the crew did an amazing job rendering the characters so that they were all faithful to their original designs (Linus’s hair is the most iffy thing I could nitpick about). To be honest, the Peanuts animated specials (and to a lesser extent the movies) were never landmarks of animation. This is probably the most loving adaptation to be brought to the screen.

I applaud the creators for not trying to modernize Charlie Brown’s world. Other than a scene where Charlie Brown brings out a blue recycling bin to the curb which belies today’s ecological sensitivities, the rest of the movie feels like it takes place in that timeless world of yesteryear. Everybody still uses corded phones, flying kites is still a thing kids do and Snoopy types his story on an old-fashioned typewriter.

If there was one thing I did NOT like, it was the songs they included in the movie. Not the musical score mind. I loved that. I hated the songs. A Boy Named Charlie Brown, Snoopy Come Home and, to a lesser extent, Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown all featured original songs that were written specifically to fit the movie. Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don’t Come Back) used classic WWII songs to great effect. For The Peanuts Movie, I feel they just got lazy. When I saw the scene in the trailer where Snoopy dances the flamenco to Bamboléo by the Gypsy Kings, I thought it might have just been a musical cue for the trailer. The song is actually in the movie and it bugs me because it feels out of place. And no disrespect to Meghan Trainor, I think she’s a fine artist and Better When I’m Dancing is even a nice catchy song, but in no way do I think it fit the movie because it felt so generic. But then outside of Disney, that seems to be the way of things when it comes to animated movies in general. I just wish they’d aspired to doing something special.

In the end, I think The Peanuts Movie was a nice attempt in capturing the essence of what made Peanuts so great. I hope it does well enough to warrant sequels as despite its flaws I loved my time revisiting my old friends. I would gladly watch it again (in the theatre even) and it will be added to my collection as soon as it comes out on BluRay.

So that’s all for this week. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V.

Greetings and salutations. My name is Tiber…oops. That’s someone else’s intro. Blog! Blam! Go!

I just biked home from work and hoo boy! What a difference from last Monday. We set the clocks back an hour over the weekend so it’s now DARK at 5pm. Going through the woods, even for the 20-30 second stretch I have to do is spooky. Fortunately I only finish late on Mondays. Also, it’s my last month of biking for the year. Then it’ll be the comforts of the bus every morning and evening.

I’m almost back to where I was when I last played Dungeons and Dragons Online. I don’t remember how long I played last time, but I’m making a lot quicker progress. I’m bolder when it comes to trying quests on higher difficulty settings and of course, remembering the content from before helps. I might just make it to level 10 this time around and be able to run new quests! WOO!

There was no Friday night board gaming last weekend. After so many consecutive weeks, it felt weird not to play anything. I’m itching to roll dice and lay down cards.

The Peanuts Movie comes out on Friday. Can’t wait!

And that’s the news. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V.

Hello friends. Thanks for checking out this week’s blog. Let’s get right to what’s floating around in my noggin.

The trailer for Star Wars Episode VII is out and it looks amazing. I have high hopes for it. Mind, I also had high expectations for Episode I and while I don’t loathe that movie like some do, it wasn’t GREAT.

There has been a LOT of talk on the webz since the trailer was released, particularly as it pertains to Luke and Rey. There’s also been some controversy about Finn that just makes me sad. Today I decided I’d share my two cents about Luke and Rey because why not?

As far as  Luke’s absence is concerned, from what little I think I know of the plot, I believe the search for Luke Skywalker is a key plotline. If this is indeed the case, it would really ruin the reveal in the movie to show him in the trailer (or in the poster). I think it really is that simple. I don’t think he’ll turn out to be evil even though apparently Mark Hamill lobbied for it in the past. To be honest, that story is the strongest sign that Luke ISN’T evil. Given how secretive they’ve been about the movie, I can’t imagine anyone would have been okay with that story being released if Luke WAS going to be evil.

The popular theory is that Rey is Han and Leia’s daughter. Based on what little I saw in the trailer, I can’t see how that works. The trailer shows a scene with Rey, Finn and Han where Rey asks about the stories and Han answers they’re all true. Now, if Rey were Han’s daughter, why would he (and Leia) have waited so long to tell her the truth about something as major as the Jedi being real? Even if they agreed to keep quiet about it in public, I would think they’d at least tell their DAUGHTER the truth about her uncle. Now don’t get me wrong, I can think of plenty of reasons they could use, I just think all of them are terrible.

The last thing that I thought was interesting came from the poster instead of the trailer. The layout and posing of Kylo Ren and Rey is such that at first glance it almost looks like Rey is holding the red lightsaber (traditionally the weapon of the Sith/Dark Jedi) instead of the carbine/staff she actually is holding. Was this placement coincidental? Maybe, but it got people talking.

Okay so that’s all for this week. Please share your thoughts about Episode VII in the comments below. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V

Greetings and salutations friends! It is blog time. So let us get to it.

Last Thursday came the bombshell revelation that Todrick has a sister. It was news that shook this web site to the core. Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration, and by slight, I mean total. Some of you may have read Todrick’s character profile, but I doubt many remembered the tidbit that Todrick is an orphan. If that’s the case though, how can he have a sister? Well, the EASY answer is that the Funnies aren’t official Age of Animus canon. They were always meant to be an alternate reality, in the same vein of the shorts at the end of each episode of Record of Lodoss War, Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. With time, the Funnies have become the primary focus of the site, but this view still holds true to me.

While that’s the easy answer, the canon answer is that while Todrick is an orphan, he clearly was raised by SOMEBODY. It turns out that that somebody, a kindly widow bird from Verdant, had a daughter named Pearl. So when Todrick says he’s going to see his sister, he means he’s going to see his adoptive sister.

Of course, the real reason is that I have a sister and it was her birthday on Thursday. I wanted to do a birthday strip for her which continued the running gag of Todrick getting caked. I wanted it to feature somebody’s sister and the easiest way to make it make sense that Todrick would be visiting this sister on her birthday was to have this sister be Todrick’s. So again, happy birthday to my sister!

To quench my D&D thirst, I decided to re-download Dungeons & Dragons Online. I played a fair bit a couple of years back and really enjoyed the game, I just found leveling up to be too long. I knew this going back in, but decided to try it again anyway. It turns out that it’s now possible to unlock the ability to start as a high level character via some financial transaction or another. I’ll have to look into it, because there’s a lot of content to play through.

I had back to back gaming nights on Friday and Saturday, which is my definition of a great weekend. Both nights featured plays of Dark Gothic. I have over twenty plays under my belt and I still really enjoy it. It’ll definitely be worth adding the expansions to my collection. With all the games out there, I’ve decided I should be more choosy when it comes to expansions. I’d rather try a new game then buy an expansion to a game I never play. That’s why, while I really like the Krosmaster system, I haven’t bought any of the newer figures (well that and the fact they went with blind packaging).

Okay, that’s all for this week. Have a good seven all and we’ll do this again next Monday. Carja V.
