Greetings Programs! Time for me to do what a good Master Control Program does and write something to disk. Or something like that.

The wheels they are a turnin’ again. A new game idea has been percolating in my brain for the last couple of weeks. I had something of a flash this morning that might give it a fun spin. Of course, I need to get into the phase where I actually produce something to play test before I get too excited. It’d be nice to get to that phase sometime.

I’ve been playing a lot of Space Base lately. Of all the board games I’ve bought in the last year, it’s easily the game I’ve gotten to the table most and it’s only been a month. The gameplay is simple and keeps you engaged even when it isn’t your turn as your opponents’ dice rolls are even more important than your own as you’ll accumulate more resources on their turns than yours depending on the player count.

The last wrestling show of the season is coming up next Saturday. One of my childhood friends is coming out of retirement (he’s actually done this a couple of times already) to wrestle a guy who’s having his last match. They fought for the guy’s first match and he wanted to go against my friend one last time. It should be a good fight.

I’m going to have to start shading some mash-ups soon. I have three pieces waiting for the finishing touches. I have one finished piece left for this week’s installment so that should give me a little motivation to get my act in gear.

That’s all there is to say this week. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. End of line.

Hello there blog fans. I hope the day finds you in good spirits.

So…Solo. What can I say? It wasn’t terrible, but I didn’t love it. I should warn, there will be spoilers.

I have to admit that I’m a little bit of a huge hypocrite here. When Disney announced that they were putting aside the established expanded universe, I was in favour of the decision because for the most part, there was little in there that I thought NEEDED to be kept in. The one big exception is the Han Solo Adventures by Brian Daley. Those three books: Han Solo at Stars’ End, Han Solo’s Revenge and Han Solo and the Lost Legacy are three of my favorite books of all time. They define Han Solo for me. The Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin was alright too, I suppose, but Daley’s books are better. They’re quick reads and they are awesome. Choosing to tell a story that doesn’t fit with what I know of those books? Yeah, that’s just not gonna work for me.

My biggest problem with the movie is that they reduced Han from a bright, elite cadet in the Imperial Navy who gets discharged for doing the right thing, to a street rat who bungles his way into the Imperial Army and who gets sentenced to death for trying to desert. That jacket he wears on Bespin in the Empire Strikes Back? I’ve always thought of it as his officer’s jacket. Guess not. The Bloodstripe on his pants leg? Nope. You don’t get one of those for being a useless grunt.

The movie has a pacing problem too. There is none. It’s a breakneck ride. Some might enjoy that, but I wanted to feel that the progress Han makes in the galaxy was earned. Not that everything just falls in his lap. Han deserts the Imperial Army, gets wrapped back up in criminal life and wins the Falcon in about two weeks’ time.

And it tries to be too cute in places. Han’s mentor Beckett tosses Han a blaster to use on their heist. Close-up shot of the gun. Hey look kids! It’s the blaster Han uses in the original trilogy. This is how he got it! Cool huh? Han’s got lucky dice. They’re shown several times. Oh wow look! They’re the dice we see dangling in the Falcon’s cockpit in A New Hope. Cool huh? His last name? Oh, there’s a story for that too, because of course there is. It’s like the first act in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade only it’s the whole movie.

The most eye-rolling part of the whole movie. The one thing I cannot believe made it through the script-writing process. No wait, there was a second one, but I’ll get to that later. The most ridiculous thing in the movie is when Han meets Chewie in the slave pit. Han’s been thrown down there so the Imperial officers can enjoy watching him get torn apart by the Wookiee slave they haven’t fed (who for some reason they bring with them on the battlefront). How does Han get out of this mess? By talking to Chewbacca…in Wookiee (Shyriiwook). It was hard to take that bit seriously. It’s bad enough he already understands Wookiee, but that he can speak it? Uggh. It’s played for laughs in the movie, and it just falls flat for me.

It’s not all bad though. There are some fun easter eggs. Qi’ra turns out to be adept at Teras Kasi, the martial art made ‘famous’ in the Playstation fighting game, Masters of Teras Kasi. Lando makes a passing reference to the Sharu (a bit from HIS trilogy of books). I’ve read of some other neat background stuff that I apparently missed as well, like the crystal skull from Han Solo and the Lost Legacy (not the Indiana Jones crystal skull).

If the movie had been called BoShek: A Star Wars Story, I would have loved it. See, I don’t have any expectations about THAT smuggler we see in the Cantina on Tatooine (he’s the guy Obi-Wan talks to before he meets Chewbacca). The movie IS entertaining. It does feel like it fits into the Star Wars universe, just not the part that they were aiming for. Ron Howard did a fine job of salvaging a movie that by all accounts was going to be absolutely horrible the way it was going before he climbed aboard.

The truth is, Solo is a movie that didn’t need to be told. Really, you can say that about just about any movie, but it’s especially true when you decide to tell a story that people feel they already know and then change everything just because you can and it’s “cool”. It’s the same problem I had with Rogue One but at least Solo didn’t leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve given the sequel trilogy a break because it’s at least trying to tell new stories (no matter how familiar some parts may seem to some). These side stories are the basest of cash grabs. Well-made cash grabs I’ll grant you, but cash grabs all the same.

So that’s it. If you temper your expectations (like don’t go in expecting to see anything you think you know about Han Solo) you’ll likely have a good time watching Solo: A Star Wars Movie.

Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Let me know what YOU thought of Solo in the comments.

Oh. I almost forgot. The second eye-roller. The one that’s the BIG reveal at the end of the movie. The head of the Crimson Dawn organization is…yeah, it’s really stupid. I don’t want to spoil it here though (plenty of other sites have done that already). You need to see it for yourself. It’s something the writer thought would be the coolest thing ever but didn’t think about how it fits into the greater narrative. It’s gratuitous fan service of the lowest order. It rivals Darth Vader tearing down that corridor at the end of Rogue One in its level of fanboyism. It’s the main reason I ultimately call this movie, well made fanfic.

Well the wonderful three-day weekend is almost to a close. Let’s finish off with a blog.

I just spent way too much time on Flickchart. It’s a website with a very basic principle: They show you two movies, you pick which one you like better. Eventually you should be able to build a list of your favorite movies. I feel like there should be a better logarithm because the way it matches movies up within your own rankings seems off. I said I liked Return of the Jedi better than A Boy Named Charlie Brown and it decided that I didn’t like it better than Star Wars or the Empire Strikes Back without asking me. Still, you have to go back and rerank movies. Transformers is nowhere near the top of my rankings but because it came up earlier, it ended up pretty high. I had to specifically go in to squash it down. It’s easy to lose yourself on the site. Curse you, Tom Vasel for mentioning it! 😉

I’m still enjoying my viewing of Deep Space Nine. I’m about a third of the way through the third season. There are some clunkers in there, but overall, the episodes are pretty solid. Anything featuring Quark is generally entertaining.

I’ve decided to dive into the Game of the Thrones Living Card Game…I’m not going to go all in. There’s just too much to go back and get. I’ll need to figure out which families I want to concentrate on and get the cards I need for those. The game is pretty good and I like the theme. I like Destiny better (duh).

I’m already halfway through drawing the Armello set. It feels like I just started. I drew Cyran as Barnaby (confusing I know, but Barnaby is a rabbit in Armello) first and for some reason I just haven’t wanted to color him. I started to remedy that today. I have the shading left to go.

That’s all the news that’s fit to print today. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V.

Hello there blog-reader. Reading already? Well yes. Otherwise how would you know I asked the question, right? Let’s see what you’ll be reading next.

It was an off weekend. Can’t say as it was a great one. My brain turned on me Sunday and I went from fine to not fine for no reason. I ended up watching a lot of Deep Space Nine reruns (this was neither the cause NOR the effect by the by).

Wow. I’m really struggling to think of something to write.

Oh. I finished Ready Player One over the weekend. The book is better than the movie. I’ll give it that. That’s about all I’ll give it though. I really feel like I should have liked it, and part of me wanted to, but…I didn’t. There was a lot of eye-rolling as I listened to the audio book.

Okay, I feel myself dozing off. That’s all I’m going to be able to write today. Have a good seven and we’ll do this again next Monday.

Greetings Programs! Time to write the blog that you will then read. Our contract will be fulfilled for another week and we will continue along our predestined paths.

I biked to work for the first time this year today. Things went well enough. I learned that I still need to wear gloves in the morning. My hands still feel a little uncomfortable.

I tried a new game over the weekend. I finally got my hands on a copy of Mystic Vale and I’m impressed. It’s a card crafting game, that is you build your cards as you play. The system uses transparent cards with advancements printed in one of three sections. You insert the advancements you buy in plastic sleeves so the next time you play the card you gain the effects of the advancement you added to it. AEG is using the system in its new game, Edge of Darkness, which has apparently been in development for a while. There was an advertisement for it in the copy of Mystic Vale I bought (Mystic Vale was released in 2016) and Edge of Darkness successfully funded through Kickstarter earlier this year. Having now played Mystic Vale and tried out the card crafting system for myself, I’m even happier that I backed Edge of Darkness.

There was an FCL show on Saturday. It was leagues better than the last card they put on. The final show of the season is in June. It’s not looking like Fab and Lyne will be able to make it. I don’t know that I want to go on my own, so I might not attend either. It’s looking like a good card though so I’ll have to see.

The first Armello piece went up last Wednesday. I got a retweet which was nice. The last time I got some feedback from someone other than a friend or regular follower was when I did the League of Legends set. I don’t think Armello’s following is quite as large, but anything that attracts outside attention is good.

That’s all for this week, I think. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V.
