Flashback Friday – Rick and Red’s Excellent Adventure

You know what day it is, I know what day it is, let’s not play any games with each other and just get to the flashback, shall we?

I’ve been revisiting themes in the original order they first appeared on the site. Next on the list was Bill and Ted. All the pictures are embiggenable. Just click on them.

Bill and Ted was a small theme the first time around so it was likely this flashback was going to be the only time I revisited it. It made sense then that both Bill and Ted would be featured. Because I like Bogus Journey more than Excellent Adventure, I considered going with the movie poster that featured Bill, Ted and the Grim Reaper pressed up against a pane of glass. I love that poster. …But it wasn’t full body. I flipped through some pictures online and decided to be ambitious and try the original movie poster or at least the main element of Bill and Ted sitting on top of the phone booth. As I went along, I decided to just do the whole thing. I even added the caption and some “credits”. My character’s dimensions meant I had to lay things out a little differently but honestly, I’m extremely proud of the way it turned out.

I wrote about the trials and tribulations of the picture here. To get an idea, on the left is an approximation of how far I’d gotten when Paint crashed, compared to the finished picture (sans space and text) to the right and the uncoloured picture underneath:

If you’re thinking to yourself, “Gee, you didn’t have very much left to do.” then you can imagine how devastating it was for me to lose all my progress. I’m just glad I ended up with a backup I could use. I know for sure I wouldn’t have had the stomach to start the whole thing over from scratch.

Finally are the comparisons to the original pieces. I remember that the originals were the first time I drew proper sleeves for the shirts the characters were wearing. They weren’t as bad as some of the earlier pieces, but my lines were a lot shakier. One of my big goals is to work on my brush strokes.

Flashback Friday – Ghostbusters

It’s Friday! It’s Friday! Flashback! Flashback!

This week’s revisit is to the Ghostbusters theme. In all likelihood it’s the only time I’ll revisit this theme simply because there’s only one basic costume to draw.

Ghostbusters was near the end of the early times of the mash-ups. The artwork was getting better and I was putting in a lot more detail. I was still using stick limbs for the legs though. I didn’t relish the idea of shading this picture so I went more with an animation style approach for light and shadow. I finally added the proton gun firing effect which I like.

Here’s the comparison with the original drawing. The smoother curves in my line work is especially noticeable in Todrick’s head.

Flashback Friday – Deema and Ameed

Hey hey it’s Friday! I’m a little late today because I couldn’t log into WordPress this morning. But now that I’m here, let’s go!

Last week, I went back to the G.I.JOE theme, so it’s no surprise that this week is KITTY (COBRA)’s turn. For those who don’t remember, when I did my COBRA theme, I changed the name to KITTY and changed the logo from a cobra to a cat’s face. It wasn’t a great logo by any stretch of the imagination. I’ve revised it a little bit, but it’s still nothing great. Making logos is not my strong suit.

Deema hasn’t had a chance to be featured in a flashback, so I chose her for this one. There aren’t as many COBRA personalities as there are JOEs so I decided to stick to the same one I did last time, which was the Crimson Guard Commanders, Tomax and Xamot. I have to say, I was really jazzed when I finished this one. I almost pushed it up a couple of weeks because I was so eager to share it, but calmer heads prevailed and I stuck to the schedule. I’m including the original artwork I based the piece on for comparative purposes.

For those who might appreciate seeing both characters individually, here they are.

And here’s the comparison with the original. I’m especially fond of the idea I had of having Deema with a bandaid on her cheek instead of a scar. In the original, I was going for the filecard art which showed Tomax and Xamot looking at each other as though they were reflections in the mirror. This time, I went for the art on the front of the original packaging.

Flashback Friday – G.I.JOE

Hey, it just turned Friday and here I am posting the Friday Flashback! Normally I’d be asleep, but thus is the fun of being on vacation.

This week’s flashback revisits the Real American Hero, G.I.JOE. As much as possible I want to give each member of the main cast a chance to be in a flashback. That’s one of the main reasons why I chose Big Oonch this week.

In the original JOE mash-ups I cast Oonch as Sci-Fi because I like Sci-Fi and he’s a character whose visor covers his eyes. The JOE team has so many characters to choose from however, that I wanted to use somebody different to keep things fresh for myself. I dallied with the idea of drawing Oonch as Lowlight, but ultimately I went with Gung-Ho. I like how he turned out. As much as possible, the first time around, I tried to use the original JOE card art as a basis for my pictures and I continued that trend here. I really struggled with the chest tattoo so I went with my own (much simpler) design for it. If you’re wondering, the B is for the Burroughs, which is where Big Oonch is from. Oonch and Cyran present a particular challenge in that their legs are so short. I think his shortness comes across.

Flashback Friday – Iron Cat

Hello and good day to you friends! It be Friday and that can only mean a new Flashback! Let us see what we shall see, shall we?

So this week, we jump back to the release of the Avengers and the set of mash-ups I drew based on the designs featured in the movie.

For the first look back at the Avengers, I decided to go with Sass as Iron Cat since I hadn’t featured any redoes of Sass designs yet. The first time around, I had her holding the Iron Man helmet. This time I simply used layers to draw her with and without the helmet on. My characters don’t have fingers so I tried to include a paw pad on the power gloves. I’ll say that making things look “techy” still isn’t a strong suit but the result is still striking to me. As always, you can click on any picture to embiggen it.

Here’s the comparison with the original. You’ll notice that this time I remembered to give her a tail. I also chose a different armor design. There have been so many. Sass is more serious about being Iron Cat this time around or has she become blasé?
