For those of you who don’t read the blog, or for those who do, but still prefer to have the artwork centralized in the artwork section (radical concept I know) here are the Animus hockey players I put on my Facebook page this weekend.

First, there’s Todrick, fervent supporter of the St. Louis Blues. He isn’t wearing a Caps jersey because his fur is red and I wanted a different coloured jersey to contrast.

But I am a Washington Capitals fan, so I HAD to include them as well. Here’s Cyran, sporting an Ovechkin-style visor AND a nifty hockey stick attachment for his wrench.

Finally, I admit it was pandering given where I live, but here’s the Big Oonch who hopes (like I do) that the NHL someday soon rights one of its wrongs and brings the Nordiques back to Quebec.

Hey all! Got me a bit of a headache today, so the blog might not be super long.

It’s April in Canada and that can only mean one thing: NHL Playoffs. When I was younger I wanted nothing to do with hockey, even though my father tried to sign me up for hockey school. (it conflicted with Saturday morning cartoons, so forget that!). I’d say that I only really started paying attention when I moved to Quebec City for CEGEP. That first year I didn’t have cable so the only English channel I got was the local CBC affiliate and during the playoffs, well, there was hockey to watch and that’s it.

I’ve had the same favorite team since before that time, the Washington Capitals. They disappoint me just about every year (except that one time they made the Finals) but they’re my team. My runner-up team has varied. It used to be the (original) Winnipeg Jets, then it was the Calgary Flames and for the last three years or so it’s been the St. Louis Blues.

The Playoffs this year have been crazy. The players are going at it as though they had no respect for one another. There’s always trash talk, and fighting is something that isn’t going away, but the dirty hits are just insane. Concussions are the topic of the day and the players are playing as if they just don’t care. The League is going to have put on its big boy pants and start handing out suspensions before there’s nobody left to play. And that goes for the star players too. Sidney Crosby may be the most talented player alive today, but his conduct in yesterday’s game was reprehensible. The name on the player’s jersey should have nothing to do with it. If you do the crime, you do the time. The Philadelphia Flyers are no saints I know, but then they don’t pretend to be either. I expect better from Crosby because he’s the League’s golden boy.

There are the outdated old school diehards that defend this stuff but that’s only because they’re too dumb to realize the game has to evolve (yes Mike Milbury, I’m calling you out) for the safety of its players. Hockey can still be a contact sport, but you have to place boundaries.

In conclusion, go Caps! Go Blues! Try not to kill each other, AND to tie this all back to the site, this weekend I drew some Animus hockey players. I’ll be adding them to the artwork section shortly.

“Remember Popkin! Keep flying west. That’s where home is!”

Popkin nodded, “I know Zo! I remember where home is!”

Zoë repeated it anyway, “Go west until you reach Sunnyvale or the Cross.” Popkin was simple-minded enough that he forgot even the simplest instructions unless they were repeated multiple times to him. “Then go to the nearest Mouse Wing hangar and get help!”

She hoped there would be help to find. The whole Wing had scrambled yesterday. Who knew where they could all be today? She shook her head. That was silly. Surely some mouse would have returned. They probably had found the younglings already, instead of flying into a storm cloud and crashing.

Popkin looked blankly at her as she talked to herself, “Are you okay, Zo? Does it still hurt really bad?”

Zoë’s head snapped up. Tears were rolling down her cheeks. She was crying! She wiped them away with the back of her paw, “I’ll be fine, Popkin. It hurts a little less than yesterday.”

Popkin stared at her for a moment, then nodded, “Okay. I’d better go then.”

“Remember! Fly west!” The mouse pointed the way with her scope. “WEST!”

Popkin nodded, “West! I won’t forget, Zo!” He started to run and flap his wings. In seconds he was airborne. “I’ll be back soon!” And just like that, he was gone.

Zoë looked around her. The Forlorn Forest was gloomy even in the daytime. And it was cold. If only she hadn’t lost her backpack. The supplies she’d been carrying with her, would have come in quite pawy right about now.

“Nothing I can do about it now“, she thought to herself. “I might as well, take another nap. I can’t worry if I’m asleep.”

And so she curled up as best she could to conserve heat and dozed off.

For Mash-Up Wednesday this week, as promised, we continue with that galaxy far, far away.

First, we have the hero of our story, young Nek Skyourser, who wields the weapon of the legendary Doremi Knights, the rhythmic blade of a flutesaber.

And to complete the gender reversal role, young Nek will come to the rescue of Prince Cyran! He’s the only one with the ears to pull off the cinnabun hairdo, even if he has to dye them brown! (The picture needed some colour anyway)

I’ll be honest. I had a long weekend and I totally forgot about the mashups until Tuesday night, so I only had time to do these two. I’m not saying there would have been a LOT more if I’d started earlier, but there would at least have been a third! Oh well, you’ll have to come back next week for more! (What a shame!)
