Back in December 2011, I bandied about the idea of doing a crossover between the Animus Funnies gang and the adventurers from my old comic, Fun ‘n’ Fantasy. I thought I’d be able to put something up in 2012. Well, it’s 2013 and as you may have noticed, there’s no crossover to be had on the site.

Believe it or not, I actually did start drawing the crossover. It was only a page, but it was enough for me to decide I wasn’t ready to tackle the project at that time. I moved on to other things, like doing mash-ups and my ill-advised Star Wars parody. But still, the crossover idea stayed in the back of my mind. Page-1

As I was thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that the art style I used for Fun ‘n’ Fantasy was too different from the style I was using in the Animus Funnies. One set of characters or the other would need to be redesigned for the project to work. I’ve been working so much on getting the look down for the Animus Funnies cast, it would have made little sense to start over from scratch for a crossover. That meant that the Fun ‘n’ Fantasy adventurers would be getting a new look.

This wouldn’t be the first time I redesigned the Fun ‘n’ Fantasy adventurers. The characters got several facelifts back when I was still drawing the strip, the most notable being when I gave them a “manga” look (that being the style I was most influenced by at the time). But when would I get around to actually doing the redesign?

The answer, as it turns out, was yesterday. I drew a first quick sketch that couldn’t have taken more than half and hour. I included Barnaby to give an idea of how the characters would scale with the Animus Funnies cast. Barnaby will tower over the Fun ‘n’ Fantasy adventurers, which makes sense given that he’s a bear.

I have five distinct sizes when I draw Animus Funnies.

Huge        – Barnaby
Tall          – Sass, Tomaw, the Pickle Patch Bandits
Average – Deema, Nektara, Todrick, Red Rich
Short       – Cyran, Big Oonch, Crismus, Popkin
Tiny         – Zoë, Skitter, Mouser

It’s looking like the Fun ‘n’ Fantasy adventurers will be in the Tall category. I’d say Kevin and Mitch (renamed for reasons) will be about Sass’s height, which should put everybody else in context.

Anyway, after the sketch, I started drawing “for real”. I penciled and inked each character one after the other, but all in the same file, so I could keep the proportions right. I started with James, then Frank, then Kevin, then Fab, then Mitch and finally Kim. At first I coloured each as I went along as well, but I stopped after Kevin because I was getting a little tired and wanted to be sure I finished drawing them all before I finished for the night. (Ultimately I ended up colouring them all before I called it quits.) Finally, I used Photoshop to play around with positioning a little.

So now I have the new look, I have most of the plot in my head, I just need to finish the script and start drawing! I’m fixing to start putting pages up before the end of 2013, but I don’t want to rush things either, so they’ll go up when they go up. For now, just know that the crossover isn’t dead!

Hey! You’re back! Just in time for a new mash-up! What great timing on your part right?

So this week is the penultimate Slayers mash-up. With a build-up like that, saying any more would be anticlimactic. So, click on da piccy to make biggy.

This week, we have Deema dressed as Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun. A mouthful right? Deema’s cheerful disposition seemed a good fit for Amelia who’s always really peppy in the show. It rarely occurs to me that tails should naturally come down from under the skirts or tunic overhangs, but it did this time…as I was colouring the piece. That required a quick re-inking to fix.

If this was the penultimate Slayers, I think you know what’s up for next week…see you then!

Hey! It’s the Monday Blog…on TUESDAY! That’s just crazy!

I wasn’t feeling particularly bloggy yesterday so I played hooky. But I’m back this morning…at 5:30 am…My cat decided that she wanted to go outside and she wasn’t going to let me sleep until she got to go outside. I love sleeping and when I get woken up a full hour and a half before I have to wake up…well let’s just say I’m not feeling particularly cheerful this morning. My vision’s a little blurry as my eyes are having a hard time focusing this morning. Fun stuff.

This weekend, I finally finished writing the Deema’s Poppa storyline. It’s set to conclude on August 8th. That’s nearly 3 months for a storyline I somehow thought I could fit into a month and a half. Oh silly me! Anyway, I’ve only got two one-shot gags before I dive right into the next storyline which I estimate will last at least two months. (I’ll find it pretty funny if it concludes in less time considering how short I thought Deema’s Poppa was going to be).

The original plan was for the next storyline to be a big summer adventure. Strictly speaking, summer will be halfway over before it even begins and it’ll take a couple of weeks for things to get rolling, so it’s looking more like a fall adventure.

The last two weeks have featured the cast sitting around the dinner table. That made for some crowded shots in some panels. I’m glad that Manga Studio allows for moving layers around so I can maximize the exposure of each character.

I’ve noticed that I’m favoring thicker brushes when drawing. I used to use the .5 mm brush almost exclusively. Now I try to use the 1mm brush as much as possible. It works well for a close-up panel with two characters. More than that, I shift down to a .8mm. The .5mm is still useful for full-body panels with several characters. Whatever brush I’m using, I normally have to shift down a size when drawing Zoë because she’s just so much smaller.

I’ve been having trouble drawing smooth curves lately. If I don’t zoom in as close as possible, I have a lot of trouble drawing Deema’s and Barnaby’s heads which are full ovals. Maybe I just need to change the nib on my pen. I’ve been hesitant to actually change the nib, because I’m worried about what it means if I do and my curves don’t improve. Well, I’m biting the bullet and changing my nib as we speak. We’ll see what happens.

Okay, that’s all for now. Have a good week folks!
