And so it was said that in the time of Monday, a blog post would be written. And that blog post would go on to be the blog post that reshaped the universe! That is not this blog post.

A tip of the hat to the late Charlotte Rae who passed away yesterday at the age of 92. Diff’rent Strokes and the Facts of Life were two TV staples of my childhood. Rest in peace.

The humidity has been brutal these past few days. Every time it rains (and it’s rained quite a bit) I hope that it’ll be the time that breaks the humidity. Not yet.

We had our Star Wars Destiny Store Championship on Saturday and I got destroyed. I played three tournament games and four “casual” games and lost all but one. Most of them were not even close. Quite a difference from the last tournament I went to. I thought I had a stronger deck too. This is just further proof that Boba Fett is an intergalactic fraud. I played better with Jar Jar than I did with him. On the plus side, as the organizer for the event, I scored a nice playmat and Ahsoka card.

Speaking of Ahsoka, a couple of weeks ago, I saw one of those internet memes that was talking about good, strong female characters in Star Wars, citing Ahsoka as perfection over Rey and Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern’s character in The Last Jedi) and while I won’t argue that Ahsoka is a (much) better character, she also got several seasons of character development over two animated series as opposed to a movie and a half for Rey and maybe about fifteen minutes for Holdo. Ahsoka was also a very divisive character when she was first introduced and I daresay most people disliked her. I’m not saying Rey will be able to develop into as strong (or beloved) a character, but she has time and room to grow. We’ll see how that pans out.

So that’s that for this week. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V.

Hey! We’re back to doing some flashbacks, but this time we’re not revisiting a theme, we’re revisiting our cast of characters.

Here’s Todrick. The main difference with how he appears in the strip is the sleeves. They’re just not something I want to be drawing in every strip.

Here’s a comparison to the original Todrick in the “mash-up” style. I started doing mash-ups in March 2012. By July I had started to do some shading. I feel I only STARTED to know more what I was doing by mid-to-late 2013, so Todrick’s not looking too great in November 2012. Those ears, those go everywhere limbs…I’ve come a long way since those days (and I’ve still got room to improve).

That’s all for this week. A new piece goes up next Friday!

Hey-lo folks! Time for a blog entry.

This is the last of my three day weeks for the summer. July went by so fast. I’ll be moving up to four-day weeks for August. I can only hope they go by as smoothly.

Last week I got my Collector’s Edition of Big Trouble in the Little China: The Game by Everything Epic Games and it was truly epic. We had a lot of fun trying it out on Wednesday. I got some rules wrong which made the game a lot easier than it should have been, and we just managed to squeak out a win. We played again on Saturday and while I got some rules right, there were still some I’d missed and while it was definitely harder, it was still easier than it should have been and we again barely pulled off the win. I look forward to playing it a third time, hopefully with all the correct rules to see if we can win that way. There’s the campaign mode that I’m also eager to try. It was a year-long wait to get it, but it was oh so worth it. It got me to rewatch the movie over the weekend and it was awesome to see how deeply they dug into the movie for references in the game. Good stuff!

A while back I believe I mentioned that I was having some trouble with some of my drawing software. Well, to update, everything seems to be better now.   From reading online I saw that a common cause for the type of problem I was having is an incorrectly installed Microsoft Visual C++ update. I went back through the last couple and it seems to have done the trick. I can save without problem in Paint and I’m able to do my text balloons without incident in Manga Studio. While I was still trying to figure out what was going on, I switched up the way I did my strips. Instead of doing the strip in English and then saving a copy to change the text to French, I did two sets of text balloons in the one file. I can set one to invisible and save and then switch to the other layer and save again. I honestly don’t know why I haven’t been doing this from the start. It saves so much space to have just the one Manga Studio file. Something good came from all the problems I was having.

That’s all for this week folks. Have a good seven and we’ll do this all again next Monday. Carja V.
